Safinatu Buhari née Yusuf (born 11 December 1952 – 14 January 2006) was a prominent Nigerian teacher.

She rose to fame as the First Lady of Nigeria from 1983 to 1985.

She was the first wife of President Muhammadu Buhari but divorced in 1988 before dying of a brief illness.

Early life

Safinatu Buhari was born in Jos, Plateau State, on December 11, 1952, to Alhaji Yusufu Mani and Hajia Hadizatu Mani.

She hails from Mani Local Government in Katsina State and is of the Fulani ethnic group in Northern Nigeria.

When Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, then Lagos Commissioner for Internal Affairs, appointed her father as his private secretary, her family moved to Lagos State.

Education

Safinatu Buhari attended Primary School in Tudun Wada, Jos.

In 1971, she attended Katsina Girls Teachers’ Training College and graduated with a Grade 2 Teacher’s Certificate.

She is trained in Islamic studies and can write in both English and Arabic.

Safinatu Buhari met Muhammadu Buhari when she was 14 years old and they married when she was 18 in 1971.

Safinatu Buhari moved to Kaduna with his children after Muhammadu Buhari’s government was overthrown by Ibrahim Babangida.
