The game, available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S from November 10, 2023, maintains the realistic, modern setting of the previous game and continues the storyline of the sub-series. The story revolves around the multinational special operations force Task Force 141, who are hunting down Vladimir Makarov, a Russian ultranationalist and terrorist who plans to incite World War III.

Modern Warfare III’s multiplayer includes 16 remastered maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009), with plans to add more new maps after release. The game also introduces Zombies mode, co-developed by Treyarch, which provides an open-world player versus player environment experience.

Originally intended as an expansion pack for Modern Warfare II, Sledgehammer Games turned it into a standalone version after developing Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021). The game was officially released in August 2023 after being leaked, with a showcase event and public testing in October. Modern Warfare III received mixed reviews upon release, particularly criticism of its campaign mode.
