Early life and education
Nduka Obaigbena, a descendant of the revered Owa Kingdom in Delta State, Nigeria, was born on July 14, 1959, in the ancient city of Ibadan, located in the western part of the country. He comes from a large and prominent family in Delta State, with two brothers, Benjamin Obaigbena and Ogochukwu Obaigbena, and two sisters, Glory Obaigbena and Isioma Obaigbena, all of whom are successful in their careers. Although the identity of his father remains a mystery, his mother, Princess Margaret Obaigbena, is a prominent and respected member of the royal family.
Nduka Obaigbena’s passion for knowledge was unquenchable from an early age, and he attended Edo College in Benin City before moving on to the University of Benin, where he honed his intellectual prowess. He then embarked on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement, attending the University of the Witwatersrand Graduate School of Business and pursuing an Advanced Management Programme at the prestigious University of Cape Town.
Despite his success, Nduka Obaigbena has also experienced great pain. In 2015, his brother, Rotimi Azubuike, passed away after a short illness in San Diego, California, leaving a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Despite this tragedy, Nduka Obaigbena continues to move forward, determined to leave his mark on the world and honor his family’s legacy.
Personal life
Although Nduka Obaigbena’s wife remains a mystery, it is known that he has a child with Ikyuma Doris Aondoaka. Details are scarce about his other children, but there are rumors that he may have a daughter living abroad. He prefers to keep his family life private, shielding his loved ones from the public eye.
Sadly, Nduka Obaigbena recently suffered the loss of his mother, Princess Margaret Obaigbena, who passed away on July 24, 2022, at the age of 88. Although the circumstances of her death have not been made public, it is clear that she was a beloved figure in Nduka’s life. As he grieves this profound loss, we can only imagine the impact his mother had on his successful career and life as a media mogul.
Career
Nduka Obaigbena’s journey in the media industry began in 1995 with the founding of ThisDay, a newspaper that quickly rose to popularity and became a household name in Nigeria. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of politics, business, education and women’s empowerment in Nigeria, he established the ThisDay Awards in 2000.
But Nduka Obaigbena’s media empire didn’t stop there; in 2013, he launched Arise News, a television news channel with a distinctly African perspective, broadcasting from bases in London, New York, Johannesburg and Lagos. Arise News quickly gained a reputation for breaking news, in-depth analysis and an uncensored worldview.
However, in 2021, Nduka Obaigbena’s reputation took a hit when a British court declared him “unfit” to be a company director due to questionable business dealings. Despite these allegations, his contributions to media in Africa are undeniable and he remains an influential figure in the industry.
Nduka Obaigbena’s passion for public service is evident in his political involvement. He was elected to the Senate in 1991 and later became a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1994. Since then, he has regularly attended and moderated the World Economic Forum, and currently serves on the Nominating Committee of the Young Global Leaders.
As President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and the Nigerian Press Foundation, Nduka Obaigbena has fought vigorously for press freedom and journalistic integrity.
