Nick Cannon says Mariah Carey’s astronomical reputation contributed to their split: ‘I’m the main character’

Even though they divorced in 2016, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have always shown respect and admiration for each other.

However, they openly admitted the difficulties caused by their contrasting personalities in their marriage.

During a recent chat with Ray Daniels, Cannon shared candid insight into their divorce, mentioning that some of the tension may have been due to Carey’s astronomical success.

When she married Carey in 2008, Cannon entered a world of celebrity, luxury and scrutiny. Amid the glitz and glamour, he struggles with defining his role in the marriage.

Despite his own successes, the MTV host mainly had to deal with being recognized as the “husband” of a superstar, which overshadowed his achievements.

“Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is this my life? There’s nothing wrong with that and I really feel comfortable,” he said.

In his detailed explanation, Cannon expressed that he did not resent their way of life. He recounts moments surrounded by secluded “islands” and people serving him “steak on a plate.”

“And then when you have kids… Your masculinity is like, wait, I’m carrying the purse, the diaper bag, I’m standing on the corner. She’s rocking out as an alpha.”

The father of 12 says he thinks the Grammy-winning singer could benefit from having a specific type of man in her life. However, he admits he doesn’t fit that description, saying he’s just a “participant” in her world.

“I am the main character,” the “Wild and Out” star said.

“I’m crazy with myself. It’s like muscular dystrophy. I have liver disease. Like I’m not the guy God put me on this earth for,” he added.

In further discussion, Cannon shared that as he reflected on his actions, he realized that he had not lived up to the person he believed he was destined to be by a higher power. Despite this perception, Carey never made him feel guilty or deprived.

“Love kept me there. It even made it work because I thought, ‘Oh, you need someone. You need a support system.'”

He concluded, “You need someone who doesn’t want you for your money. You need someone who’s sincere and ready to build a family,’…but there’s something that’s always inside me.”
