early life
Nicki Minaj was born on December 8, 1982, in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, and moved to Queens, New York with her family when she was five years old.
Her father, Robert Maraj, was a heavy drug addict with a long history of violent behavior, and at one point he set the house on fire in an unsuccessful attempt to kill Minaj’s mother, Carol Maraj.
These early struggles helped her stay focused and strengthened her drive and passion to surpass her parents and make a difference in their lives.
Before Nicki Minaj became famous, she went by the names Cookie and Harajuku Barbie.
