She kept quiet about her family information. Adopting a lifestyle where she would move from city to city and not settle in one particular place was always the plan.

But she couldn’t live anywhere else but Seattle. So she spent the rest of her life in this city.

Realizing she wanted to pursue something else, she earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington. And in 2013, she enrolled at Seattle University School of Law. She graduated with her Juris Doctor in 2016.

Nicole joined the King County Public Defenders Department as a Staff Attorney in the Bar Association Division from 2016-2020. She then founded NTK Law LLC, where she served as the managing attorney. If elected, Nicole Thomas-Kennedy has promised to stop prosecuting most misdemeanors. She believes the criminal justice system reinforces systemic oppression, disproportionately punishing BIPOC, people with disabilities, and the poor. Meanwhile, prosecuting most misdemeanors is a waste of the City’s time and money.

Before pursuing a career in law, Nicole believed that punishment was not always the best way to handle every situation. She spent most of her career working as a public defender. But her work as a public defender in Seattle Municipal Court made her realize that the system was not working.

Nicole understood that the justice system was never broken, but was designed wrong. So she chose to support defunding the Seattle police department and became an abolitionist.

Her policy is not just aimed at the police, but the entire prison system. She believes that the prison system only reinforces all the injustices we see from officers. To make her vision effective, Nicole plans to start by eliminating misconduct. She also believes that crime stems from mental health and addiction issues and that the legal system will not be able to eliminate that.

She found all previous reforms ineffective. According to Nicole, the Consensus Decree was often used by the SPD as a shield.
