Early life and education

Joe Ajaero began his career journey as a research officer at the 1st Mechanized Infantry Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from 1990 to 1991. He later worked as a reporter/reporter and assistant news editor at Vanguard Newspapers from 1992 to 2001.
Ajaero started his career with the National Union of Electrical Workers (NUEE) in 2001 where he initially served as the Head of Training/Information. Over the years, he worked hard and became the National President in 2005.
Throughout this role, Joe Ajaero remained committed to fighting for better working conditions and benefits for electricity workers in Nigeria. In addition, he was fearless in speaking out against government policies that he believed were detrimental to workers’ rights and benefits.
In 2023, Ajaero emerged as the elected President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, marking a major milestone in his career. Notably, he became the first person from the electricity industry to hold this prestigious leadership position in the NLC.

On 14 November 2023, Bank and electricity workers expressed support for the nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The strike, announced by the unions, will begin at midnight on November 14. The strike is in protest against the alleged attack on Joe Ajaero, NLC Chairman, in Imo State on November 1.
