Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu sometimes referred to as the Oba Of Lagos was born and raised in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The 77-year-old is a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police and currently holds the post of Oba of Lagos.

He recently courted controversy after a large warehouse filled with painkillers was discovered inside his wall during the #EndSars protests.

Early life

Rilwan Akiolu, also known as Oba Akiolu, was born on October 29, 1943.

He grew up in the Southwestern part of Nigeria; specifically Lagos State. As a child, Akiolu showed remarkable brilliance.

Education

After completing his basic education, Oba Rilwan Akiolu enrolled at Ansar-Ud-Deen College in Surulere, Lagos State; he studied for five years (1961-1965) and obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE).

He also studied Law at the prestigious University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State and received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B).

Career

In 1970, Oba Rilwan Akiolu joined the Nigeria Police Force and held various positions until 2002. During that time, he rose through the ranks and was eventually appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police in 1999, before retiring three years later.

Rilwan Akiolu is also a distinguished fellow of the Nigerian Law School and a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

Following the death of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II on 1 March 2003, Rilwan Akiolu was chosen by the traditional founders of the Lagos kingdom as the 21st Oba of Lagos and confirmed by the Lagos State Government on 23 May 2003 to succeed the late ruler.

On August 9, 2003, Rilwan Akiolu was crowned as the 21st Oba of Lagos; and has ruled for nearly two decades.

Argumentative

Following the coronation of Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Akinsemoyin Royal Family of Lagos filed a lawsuit in court alleging denial of their right to the throne.

In April 2015, Oba Rilwan Akiolu also sparked controversy after he publicly swore in a meeting with Igbo leaders in Lagos State that Akinwunmi Ambode would be appointed as the next Governor of Lagos State. His comments that ‘anyone who goes against his will will die inside Lagos-Lagoon’, “left many deeply disappointed.

During the #EndSars protests in the last quarter of 2020, Oba Rilwan Akiolu’s palace was raided by angry mobs who discovered a large stockpile of painkillers allegedly meant for people in his community. A video of the incident also drew derogatory comments from social media users after it went viral.

His governing team was also taken away by some youths during the rebellion; prompting the Lagos Court to demand their return to restore peace and order.
