Early life and education
Odalis Amadol Perez was born in the Dominican Republic on June 11, 1977. He died on March 10, 2022. Perez attended Damian David Ortiz High School in his hometown and graduated in 1995. He began his professional baseball career as a baseball player for the Republic.
Career
Atlanta Braves
Perez debuted with the Braves in 1998 and went 0-1 in his first season. In the same postseason, he also became the first pitcher in MLB history to win a game without actually winning the season opener.
Pérez earned his first regular season win in 1999, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing two runs while striking out seven batters as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-3. He was traded to the Dodgers in 2002 in exchange for Gary Sheffield.
Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team
Perez won 27 games in a two-year span from 2002 to 2003, 15 in 2002 and 12 in 2003, tied with Tom Glavine for third in the National League behind Randy Johnson and Al Leiter, and tenth overall in the league.
Perez was also selected to the All-Star Game in 2002, a season in which he pitched a pair of one-hit games, after allowing two or fewer runs in 33 of his 62 starts. In 2004, Perez had the most no-decisions of any starting pitcher in MLB, with 18.
He is the only Dodger left-handed pitcher to hit at least 12 games in consecutive seasons since Fernando Valenzuela did it between 1986 and 1987. Perez also ranks fourth in the National League in strikeouts, tied for sixth among major league left-handers during that time.
Kansas City Royals
Concerns about Perez’s ethics and mindset grew in 2006, and the front office sought to trade the left-handed pitcher shortly thereafter, according to then-GM Ned Colletti’s memoir, The Big Chair. Colletti was approached by owner Frank McCourt shortly after a poor outing in a 10-8 loss,
“I don’t care if you have to close the deal. Get him out of this situation.” Perez was dealt by the Kansas City Royals in 2006 in exchange for Elmer Dessens. Perez’s $9 million option was declined, and the Royals compensated Perez with a $1.5 million settlement in 2007.
Washington National Team
Perez was welcomed to spring training in 2008 after signing a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals. That year, the Nationals purchased Perez’s contract. Prior to the 2009 season, Perez signed a minor league contract with the Nationals.
