Overwatch 2

In 2022, Blizzard Entertainment released Overwatch 2, the follow-up to the popular 2016 game Overwatch. It is intended to include player versus player (PvP) modes and cooperative modes where players team up against the game. However, plans for these co-op modes were scrapped in 2023, and the game is now primarily PvP focused.

On the PvP front, the game has made some significant changes. The team now has five players instead of six. They’ve also made significant changes to some of the game’s main characters.

Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play game that can be played on various gaming platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It launches as an early access game on October 4th. An important feature is that players can play games against each other regardless of which platform they are using, this is called cross-platform gaming.

On August 10, 2023, Blizzard removed the “Early Access” label with the release of “Overwatch 2” Season 6, indicating that the game is now fully online and open to everyone.

“Overwatch 2” gameplay

Overwatch 2 is a game where players can choose from 35 unique heroes divided into damage, support, and tank categories. It’s all about players fighting each other across various modes and maps.

The game changes the team size from six to five players in an effort to speed up the game. Some roles have been tweaked: injured heroes move faster, support heroes heal slowly over time, and tanks can be more offensive.

A new mode called “Push” has been added, where teams compete to push robot payloads. Some old maps are not available in the main mode due to balance issues.

Overwatch 2 is free-to-play, ditching loot boxes in favor of a battle pass system with rewards and a store for direct purchase.

You need a Blizzard account to play, and in addition to competitive rankings, progress can be shared across platforms. Introducing new story missions and special hero training missions, available for free during select seasons but available for purchase separately.

“Overwatch 2” development

Overwatch 2 was released in 2019 and was designed to maintain a shared environment with the original game, allowing players of both games to play together in existing modes. There are plans to release new content for both games. However, Overwatch 2 later became a free-to-play game, replacing the original game. When it launched on October 4, 2022, the original game’s servers were shut down and players kept their unlocked items.

The game uses an upgraded engine that allows for larger maps for new story-based PvE elements. All heroes received visual upgrades, but not all will be ready when the game launches.

The game was originally planned to release in 2022, but the release was delayed to improve quality. There are plans to merge the two games into one to ensure a seamless experience. Notably, Jeff Kaplan left Blizzard and Aaron Keller took over as lead developer. They also realized they were focusing too much on Overwatch 2 and neglecting to support the original game.

Blizzard decided to split the release of Overwatch 2, launching a beta version of the PvP part in April 2022 and delaying the PvE part. Early Access without PvE mode started on October 4, 2022, but faced issues such as server issues due to attacks and authentication issues for some players.

The game aims to introduce a PvE mode separate from PvP, offering story-driven events. However, these plans were canceled in May 2023 due to concerns about possible impact on PvP. Instead, Blizzard announced paid story missions for players, including in-game rewards and cosmetics.
