Early life and education
Patrick Kielty was born on 31 January 1971 in County Down, Northern Ireland; Kielty was raised by his parents, Jack Kielty and Mary Kielty. He grew up with his two siblings, Mary Jo Porter and Michael Kielty.
Kielty attended Queen’s University Belfast, where he honed his skills as a performer and entertainer. He is Irish and identifies as a Christian in terms of his religion.
Career
Patrick Kielty began performing regularly as a student at St Patrick’s Grammar School in Downpatrick, where a sports master encouraged him to demonstrate his ability to imitate local politicians, celebrities and athletes. His professional comedy career began while he was a psychology student at Queen’s University Belfast.
In 1991, Kielty and friend Jackie Hamilton visited the new stand-up comedy club The Gasworks in Dublin, where they performed an opening act that prompted Billy Magra/McGrath to recommend that they open their own comedy club in Belfast, which later became The Empire on Botanic Avenue.
The following year, Kielty was a finalist in the Billy Magra/McGrath National Comedy Search for Ireland’s most-watched television show, The Late Late Show, debuting alongside another future star, Dylan Moran.
The experience led to a successful BBC NI series called The Empire Laughs Back, also produced by Jackie Hamilton. One of Kielty’s comedy routines involved donning a hood and making fake paramilitary statements. In 2022, Kielty embarked on his first stand-up comedy tour in seven years, joking that it gave him the perfect opportunity to catch up on sleep.
Kielty has also acted, performing in the play A Night in November in Belfast, London and Dublin in 2007–2008. In 2023, he appeared in the film Ballywalter, playing a stand-up comedian, and in an episode of the BBC comedy series Queen of Oz, in which he is seen and heard questioning the antics of the show’s main character, played by Catherine Tate.
