Paul Stephen Rudd was born on April 6, 1969, in Passaic, New Jersey, to British-born Jewish parents.
His father, Michael Rudd, is a historic tour guide and former vice president of TWA, while his mother, Gloria Irene Granville, Sales Manager at KSMO-TV in Kansas City, Missouri.
Ladd’s parents were both from London, his father from Edgware and his mother from Surbiton. They are descendants of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants who immigrated to Britain from Belarus, Poland and Russia.
Rudd’s grandfather changed his paternal surname from Rudnitsky to Rudd. His maternal surname was Goldstein, and his parents were distant cousins.

Growing up, Rudd attended a bar mitzvah in Ontario, Canada, and began to enjoy reading the British comics “The Beano” and “The Dandy”, which his uncle sent him from England.
At the age of ten, Rudd’s family moved to Lenexa, Kansas, and he lived briefly in Anaheim, California, for three years because of his father’s job.
In Kansas, Rudd attended Broadmoor Junior High School and graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1987.
