In 2007, she joined Post Office Limited as group network director. On 1 April 2012, she became the company’s chief executive officer (CEO), at the same time that Post Office separated from Royal Mail Group to become a separate government-owned company.
During Vennells’ tenure as CEO, the Post Office went from a £120m loss in 2012/13 to reporting a £35m profit in 2017/18. However, liabilities related to the Horizon scandal were later estimated to include £160m in compensation, £298m in ongoing legal fees and £1bn of taxpayers’ money set aside for future compensation.
As CEO of the Post Office, Vennells earned a total of £5.1 million, peaking in 2018 when she received £718,300 in salary, bonuses, pensions and other benefits. In 2016, she was also appointed a non-executive director of supermarket chain Morrisons, in addition to her role at the Post Office.
In February 2019, it was announced that Vennells would be stepping down from her role at the Post Office, and that month she was appointed a non-executive board member at the Cabinet Office. In April 2019, she took up the chairmanship of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, a position she will hold until 2021.
