In 1961, he moved to London, England, where he studied at several music schools, including Trinity College of Music.

Profession

While in London, Peter King teamed up with drummer Bayo Martins and trumpeter Mike Falana to form the band The African Messengers.

The band performed at festivals and clubs, and served as the backing band for bands such as The Four Tops, Diana Ross and The Temptations. African Messengers also recorded many 45rpm records. Their song “Highlife Piccadilly”, a fusion of highlife and jazz, became a hit.

Peter King later formed another band, called The Blues Builders, with which he toured Europe and North Africa.

In 1969, he returned to his native Nigeria to perform on the front lines during the Nigerian Civil War with his band, Voices of Africa. In 1971, the veteran returned to London to tour Europe, the United States, and Japan with his new band, Shango.

Peter King founded his own music school in a three-room building in Mazar Mazar in 1982. Initially, the school had about 30 students but has since expanded and is currently located in Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The school has lecture halls, rehearsal rooms, concert halls and dormitory facilities. The school has been assisted by Canadian musicians Oliver Jones and Archie Allen, and has received strong support from the French government.

Since 1982, more than 2,000 students have graduated from the school. The school offers practical teaching and awards certificates and diplomas. It prepares students for Associate, Licentiate and Fellow professional examinations at Trinity College, the Royal Academy of Music and the London Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
