Early life
Born June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California, Philip Alfred Mickelson began playing golf as a toddler. Phil and Mary Mickelson have long said that their son ran away from home when he was three years old, telling neighbors he was going to the golf course.
Mickelson began playing golf as an amateur as a teenager. He won 34 titles at the San Diego Junior Golf Association, using his father’s job as an airline pilot to get tickets to his events.
His mother took on another job to financially support his American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) career, which earned him three AJGA Rolex Player of the Year awards and a full scholarship to Arizona State University.

Phil Mickelson is married to Amy McBride and has three children. Phil’s PGA Tour schedule was temporarily suspended after Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. He returned to play after doctors told him the cancer was caught early and treatable.
