ISLAMABAD: Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges of our time and Pakistan is one of the leading countries severely affected by its impacts.
Due to global warming, Pakistan is facing frequent extreme heat waves, floods due to melting glaciers, and unpredictable rains and droughts. These serious problems not only damage the economy but also human life.
Over the years, Pakistan has taken many measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, including banning single-use plastics.
The ban was first imposed on single-use plastics in Islamabad in 2019, but could not be fully implemented.
Recently, the Ministry of Climate Change issued a strict directive requiring all federal ministries and agencies to strictly implement the ban, which aims to not only reduce environmental pollution but also help reduce the impact negative effects of climate change.
Plastic pollution and its harmful effects
Pakistan generates millions of tons of plastic waste every year but most of it is never recycled. This waste pollutes soil, water and marine life. Microplastic particles entering the body through human food and drinking water are causing serious health risks. These particles accumulate in the body system and cause various diseases.

A ban on reuse of plastic has been imposed under the Plastics Regulations 2003. The government claims that the ban will not only reduce environmental pollution but will also have a positive impact on public health.
Agriculture and climate change
Climate change is also having a devastating impact on Pakistan’s agriculture.
Water shortages, erratic weather conditions and weak agricultural production are putting enormous pressure on the rural economy.

The rapid melting of glaciers not only exacerbates flood risks but also harms water bodies.
The importance of community awareness
Raising public awareness is vital for the success of government initiatives. It is necessary to raise people’s awareness that using environmentally friendly products instead of plastic bags is not only better for health but also protects the environment.
Challenges faced
A developing country like Pakistan is facing many challenges in responding to climate change. Lack of resources, weak law enforcement and lack of public awareness further complicate the problem. Global cooperation, access to advanced technology and public awareness are essential to understanding the magnitude of the problem.
Needs collective effort
Governments and people must work together to minimize the impacts of climate change and pollution. Banning the use of plastic is a positive step but its real results can only be achieved if the public actively participates in it. This activity not only helps reduce current pollution but also provides a clean and healthy environment for future generations.
Additional measures
The government must focus on other environment-friendly initiatives such as afforestation development, renewable energy projects and effective water management. Through these measures, the risks of climate change can be mitigated, creating the foundation for a sustainable future.
Such a joint exercise not only ensures environmental protection but also helps Pakistan move towards a stable and secure environment.
