Pokemon Legends Arceus Gameplay
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an action role-playing game that retains basic gameplay elements from previous mainline series titles. In this game, players are free to explore a vast map divided into five different areas with unique environments. As players travel through these areas, they will encounter a variety of Pokémon that live in different habitats, each displaying different behaviors. Some Pokémon may avoid players, while others may act aggressive.
To aid in their exploration, players can ride certain Pokémon, which allows them to travel faster, swim through bodies of water, climb cliffs, and even fly. Additionally, players may encounter “Alpha” Pokémon, which are larger, more powerful versions of regular Pokémon, adding an element of challenge to the game.
Unlike previous games, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus the player character can be attacked and injured by wild Pokémon. If the player takes too much damage, they will faint and respawn in the base camp.
Players can choose to capture wild Pokémon without engaging in combat, although some Pokémon still require combat to capture. Combat in the game is still turn-based, but a new feature allows players to trade attack damage for extra turns or vice versa, introducing a strategic element to the combat system.
By participating in battles, catching Pokémon, and interacting with them, players can progress toward completing Pokédex entries. The game also offers side quests for non-player characters (NPCs) that players can accept and complete.
When Pokémon Legends: Arceus was released, there were a total of 242 Pokémon, including 7 new species and 17 new “forms” of existing Pokémon. At the start of the game, players can choose from three starting Pokémon: Kota, Cindakil, and Oshawott, each from a different region, a first for a mainline Pokémon game.
While players can trade Pokémon with others online, the game does not include multiplayer battles, unlike previous entries in the series.
Plot summary
The game is set in the historical era of the Sinnoh region (known as the Emerald Region), predating the events of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Emerald is set on the real-life island of Hokkaido during the Muromachi period, where new settlers from other areas interact with indigenous groups similar to Hokkaido’s Ainu and Japanese settlers. In the game, the Ainu tribe is represented by the Diamond Tribe and the Pearl Tribe, while the New World settlers are represented by the Galaxy Expedition.
Much of the region is covered in sparse wilderness, inhabited by wild Pokémon, who are treated as wild animals or forces of nature rather than companions. What’s unique about this game is that the Poké Balls are made from the “apricot” fruit, which releases steam when catching Pokémon, giving it a more traditional feel compared to the high-tech devices in previous games.
The story begins with the player accepting a mission from the legendary Pokémon Arceus to encounter all Pokémon in the Emerald Region. Players teleport there through a space-time rift and meet Pokémon researcher Professor Lavington, who takes them to Jubilife Village. There, players join the Survey Corps, a group of galactic explorers who are exploring and studying the area. With their starting Pokémon in hand, players begin completing the Pokédex.
During the journey, space-time rifts caused some powerful “noble Pokémon” revered by the local Diamond and Pearl tribes to become violent with powerful lightning. Players must use “balm” to calm them down and fight them.
However, a rift intensifies, leading to the player being blamed for instability by Team Galactic leader Commander Kamado and being expelled from Fun Village. The player then travels to the area again, working with either the Diamond Tribe or the Pearl Tribe, and with the help of a folklore researcher named Cogita, to resolve the cause of the rift.
Players travel to the three major lakes and encounter the legendary Pokémon Azelf, Mesplit, and Uxy, who represent willpower, emotion, and knowledge respectively. After passing the test, the three provided the materials to make the red chain needed to stop the rift. Players face Commander Kamado at the top of a mountain and eventually reach the Sinnoh Temple in the center of the area.
Depending on which clan the player is working with, Dialga (Diamond Clan) or Palkia (Pearl Clan) will appear first, break the red chain, and be captured by the player before an angry opponent appears. Using the fragments of the Red Chain, you can create special Poké Balls that can capture other Legendary Pokémon. Players fight and capture the legendary Pokémon in its original form, sealing the rift in space and time.
After the game is over, the player cooperates with Volo, a member of the Ginkgo Guild’s trade group, to find all the tiles related to Arceus. Throughout the journey, players will encounter other legendary Pokémon, each holding a plate. However, Volo betrays the player and attempts to steal the Golden Plate to conquer Arceus and create a new world. The player defeats Volo and Giratina, obtains the final piece of plate armor, and obtains the Azure Flute.
After capturing all other Pokémon, players can encounter Arceus by playing the Blue Flute in the Sinnoh Temple. After proving himself in battle, Arceus grants players a part of himself, allowing them to explore the world together.
