Early life and education
Pom Klementieff was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, on May 3, 1986. She has a Korean mother and a French-Russian father named Alexis Klementieff, who worked for the French government as a consul.
Because jus soli does not apply to children of diplomats, she is a French citizen but does not have Canadian citizenship. Her ethnicity can only be traced to France. Eugene Klementieff, a Russian painter, was her grandfather. Her parents chose the name “Pom” because it is pronounced similarly to the Korean words “spring” and “tiger.”
Pom Klementieff lived in Canada for a year before her father’s business required the family to travel constantly. Before coming to France, they lived in Japan and Ivory Coast.
After her father died of cancer when she was five years old, and her mother suffered from schizophrenia and was unable to care for her children, Pom Klementieff was raised by her uncle and aunt.
Her brother committed suicide on her 25th birthday, and her uncle, whom she described as “like a second father,” died on her 18th birthday.

Pom Klementieff’s first professional role was in the French independent film Après Lui, released in 2007, in which she played the stepdaughter of the heroine Catherine Deneuve. Her scenes took three days to shoot. She was supposed to push someone down a flight of stairs in one scene, but she fell down the stairs herself, and Gaël Morel, the film’s director, kept the scene in the final cut.
Loup, released in 2009, is a French film about a tribe of reindeer herders in the Siberian mountains, where she got her first leading role.
Pom Klementieff stayed at the camp, hours away from the neighboring village, as temperatures dropped significantly below zero while filming. She befriended local nomads, worked with real wolves, rode reindeer and swam with horses in a lake while filming.
Spike Lee’s Oldboy (2013), adapted from a Korean film, was where Pom Klementieff made her Hollywood debut. She played Haeng-bok, the bodyguard of the villain, played by Sharlto Copley.
