His mother raised all four children on her own. Rondo initially showed an interest in football, but his mother pushed him to play basketball because it would help him lose his skinny body.
Rondo took basketball seriously and attended Eastern High School in Louisville. His three years there earned him All-State honors and the 7th District Player of the Year.
Rondo then transferred to Virginia Oak Hill Academy for his senior year and averaged a record-breaking 303 assists and a double-double. His 55-point game in high school is the second-highest in Oak Hill Academy basketball history.
In 2004, Rondo was named to the McDonald’s All-American Team and also played in the Jordan Capital Classic. Rondo then joined the University of Kentucky, where he played against Louisville, South Carolina, and Central Florida.
But Kentucky did not make it to the NCAA Tournament finals. He did, however, set two Kentucky records. He qualified for the U.S. men’s national basketball team, under 21, and they won the gold medal at the World Games in Texas.

He was then traded to the Boston Celtics along with Brian Grant, also of the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his rookie season, Rondo played a supporting role and split time with Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair.
