Early life
Ralph Edward Tresvant was born in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, on May 16, 1968, to Patricia Tresvant and Ralph Hall. LaTonya and Andre are Trasvant’s two siblings.
Tresvant began performing at local talent shows with friends Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins. They were discovered by Brooke Payne, an emerging local producer and musician.

Payne dubbed them New Edition after their audition, implying that they were a new version of the Jackson 5. Maurice Starr signed them to his own label Streetwise Records to create a “newer version” of the pop group The Jackson 5.
Popcorn Love, Is This the End, Jealous Girl and the title track were all lead singles from their debut album Candy Girl, released in 1983. New Edition left Starr’s management and record company after a money dispute.
They signed with MCA Records. Their self-titled debut album went double platinum after selling two million copies. The lead single, “Sensitivity,” spent 20 weeks on the US R&B Singles chart, including two weeks at number one.
