early life

Rema was born on May 1, 2000, in the Ikubor family. He was born on Labor Day and eight days later his parents named him Divine. He is the eldest son and the first boy in the family.

Rema is the son of Justice Ikubo, who was allegedly murdered in a hotel room by his political opponents.

He was born and raised in Benin City in the South-South region. He is an indigene of Edo State. Although he grew up in a multicultural community, his parents raised him to Christianity. This meant that he would go to the local church on Sundays to worship God.

Rema became interested in music during his teenage years as he discovered he had a natural talent for it. As a secondary school student, he wowed his classmates and the entire school with his singing and rapping skills.

Profession

After graduating from high school, Rema did not immediately start his higher education. During this time, he perfected his musical style and became a better musician while waiting for fate to take his place.

His prayers were finally answered in 2018 when he posted a freestyle video for D’Prince’s song ‘Gucci Gang’ on Instagram. The video went viral on the social media app and caught the attention of D’Prince, who was attracted by Rema’s talent.

After that, D’Prince, who is also an A&R and talent manager, contacted Rema and began to develop the young artist. In 2019, he signed Rema to Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records.

A few months after joining Mavin Family, Rema released his first solo album, an EP titled Rema. The EP consists of four songs, including the following songs: Iron Man, Corn, Why, and Dumebi. Soon after its release, the EP reached number one on Apple Music Nigeria. The two hit singles from the album were Dumebi and Iron Man.

On May 21, 2019, Dumebi’s music video was released, much to the delight of Rema’s growing fan base. Since its release, the video has been viewed over 50 million times on YouTube. The video was shot and directed by Ademola Falomo.

While “Dumebi” was doing well on the charts, Rema released an EP in 2019 titled “Iron Man” which peaked at number one on the Nigerian Apple Music charts and topped several charts in Africa.
