Rhulani Mokwena is a 37 year old South African football coach.
He was born on 8 January 1987 into a footballing family. He was an assistant coach to Steve Komphela and Pitso Mosimane at Platinum Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns FC.
In 2020, he was appointed head coach of Chippa United, a football club in the South African Football League.

Early life
Rhulani Mokoena grew up in a footballing family. He was raised by his father, Julius “KK” Sono, a former Orlando Pirates footballer. He learned advanced football tactics from a very young age.
Rhulani’s late grandfather, Eric Bhamuza Sono, also played for Orlando Pirates Football Club and was captain before retiring. Tragically, he died in a car accident. He was also coached by his uncle, Jomo Sono, owner of Jomo Cosmos FC.
Education
Rhulani Mokoena was very intelligent as a student. He received his basic education before studying Sports Science at a tertiary institution. He obtained a Diploma in this subject and turned to professional football.
Rhulani’s mother was against his decision to focus on football. She wanted him to study Law, which Rhulani strongly objected to.
Career
With a long family tradition in football, it was only a matter of time before Rhulani pursued a career in football.
He began his professional career as an assistant football coach to Steve Komphela, Cavin Johnson and Allan Freese at Silver Stars (now known as Platinum Stars). He moved to Mamelodi Sundowns FC in 2014 and worked with the club’s youth team.
His excellent performance earned him the opportunity to assist first team coach, Pitso Mosimane. Together they won the CAF Champions League in 2016.
Rhulani Mokwena moved to Orlando Pirates FC in 2017 and served as assistant coach to Milutin Sredojevic and Josef Zinnbauer for two years.
He was eventually appointed as Chippa United’s first-team coach on 4 March 2020. His stint as head coach was short-lived due to the Covid-19 outbreak. With league fixtures suspended during that time, Mokwena oversaw a single match before his contract expired.
Personal life
Rhulani Mokwena runs a foundation called the Rhulani Mokwena Foundation. Apart from sports, he is also involved in social and personal development activities.
He is married to Angela Mokwena.
