Early life
Rick Ross is an African American born to William Roberts and Tommie Roberts. He was born on January 28, 1966. He has an older sister named Tawanda Roberts.
His parents named him William Leonard Roberts III. He was born and raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi. As a teenager, he was very interested in rap music and football. He often spent his free time writing freestyle rap songs.
Rick Ross was a good football player, which helped him win a scholarship to study at the University of Albany. After graduating from college, he worked various jobs to make ends meet. He worked as a prison guard from December 1995 to January 1997.

Career
Before releasing his debut single Hustlin’ in 2006, Rick Ross was scouted by several top record labels, including Bad Boy Records and Murder Inc. However, he decided to sign a multi-million dollar record deal with Def Jam Recordings, which was headed by Jay Z at the time.
His debut studio album, Port of Miami, was released by Def Jam Recordings in August 2006. Upon release, the project debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold 187,000 copies in its first week. Port of Miami was certified Gold by the RIAA in November 2006.
Rick Ross released his critically acclaimed second studio album, Trilla, in March 2008. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. The project spawned commercially successful songs such as Speedin, The Boss, Here I Am and This Is The Life. MTV News ranked him as one of the hottest MCs of 2008.
Between 2009 and 2021, Rick Ross has released nine more solo studio albums. These are Deeper Than Rap (2009), Teflon Don (2010), God Forgives, I Don’t (2012), Mastermind (2014), Hood Billionaire (2014), Black Market (2015), Rather You Than Me (2017), Port of Miami 2 (2019), and Richer Than I Have Ever Been (2021). He worked on the collaborative album Custom Cars & Cycles with Triple C. The project was released in 2009.
In 2009, Rick Ross founded the record label Maybach Music Group (MMG). The record label has contributed to the success stories of top American artists such as Meek Mill, French Montana and Wale.
