Ricardo Bell was born on September 18, 1967 in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, to Dorothy Mae and Daniel A. Bell, and spent his childhood in the Orchard Park Projects. He is one of eleven siblings.

In 1978, Bell co-founded New Edition with his friends, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe. Bell was offered the opportunity to go solo after the trio recorded Heartbreak but instead chose to join Bell Biv DeVoe.
After Bobby Brown left New Edition in the 1980s, Johnny Gill joined the group. Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD) was the first band to consistently combine elements of rap and R&B.
Bell’s breakthrough performance in 1990 established him as a chart-topping lead singer. Bell began his career with New Edition as a backup singer, but quickly became one of the group’s most popular vocalists on singles.
Bell sang lead or co-lead vocals on the group’s remaining charting singles, with the exception of the joint songs Hot2Nite and Hit Me Off and the Brown-led You Don’t Have to Worry.

He eventually overdosed on cocaine and nearly died, which landed him in rehab. Bell has remained sober since completing his rehab treatment. His addiction struggles were not made public until a miniseries was released in 2017.
