Ricky Ponting was born in Launceston, Australia, on 19 December 1974. He was raised by his parents, Graeme Ponting and Lorraine Ponting, along with his brother Drew Ponting and sister Renee Ponting.

Ponting attended Brooks High School during his formative years. He is Australian and Christian.

Career

Ricky Ponting is the eldest of three children born to Graeme and Lorraine Ponting. Graeme was a keen club cricketer and Australian Rules player, while Lorraine was a strong state champion. Ponting’s uncle, Greg Campbell, also played Test cricket for Australia in 1989 and 1990.

Ponting was introduced to cricket by his father, Graeme, and uncle, Greg. At the age of 11, he played for Mowbray U-13s in 1985-86 and quickly emerged as a prodigious talent.

In January 1986, he scored four centuries in a week in the Northern Tasmanian youth cricket competition, earning him a sponsorship deal with bat manufacturer Kookaburra. Less than a month later, he scored a century in the U-16 competition.

Ponting made his first-class debut for Tasmania in November 1992 aged 17 years and 337 days, becoming the youngest Tasmanian player to play in a Sheffield Shield match.

He had to wait until 1995 to make his ODI debut for Australia in a quadrilateral tournament in New Zealand. He soon after made his Test debut in the 1995 home series against Sri Lanka, scoring 96 runs.

Despite losing his place in the national team a few times due to form and discipline issues, Ponting went on to become Australia’s ODI captain in 2002 and Test captain in 2004, cementing his status as one of the country’s greatest cricketers.
