Career in business

From 2001 to 2004, Sunak worked as an analyst at Goldman Sachs. He then moved to hedge fund management firm The Children’s Investment Fund Management, where he rose to partner in 2006.

Before leaving in 2009 to take care of his former colleagues at Theleme Partners, a new hedge fund founded in 2016 with $700 million under management, he was also a director at his father-in-law’s investment firm, Catamaran Ventures.

Career

In 2014, he joined the Conservative Party and in 2015, he won the Richmond (Yorks) seat previously held by former Conservative Party leader Lord William Hague. Mr Sunak was also re-elected in 2017.

He was hugely popular in his constituency at the time, winning by more than 27,000 votes. George Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, backed Theresa May’s Brexit deal and Boris Johnson’s bid to take over the leadership of the Conservative Party.

After Sajid Javid stepped down in 2020, he took over as Chancellor and has held the position ever since. Perhaps his most notable decision since becoming Chancellor in 2020 was the announcement of the furlough scheme.

He also supported the Job Retention Scheme and the Eat Out To Help Out scheme which play a key role in the government’s response to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.

A tax reform deal was agreed in 2017 at a G7 meeting in London, hosted by Sunak, with the aim of setting a global minimum tax rate for multinationals and online technology companies.

The OECD has reached an agreement to join the tax reform proposal in 2021. Sunak has presented his third budget for 2021. This budget includes significant investment commitments, largely for science and education.
