Early life and education

Robert De Niro was born in New York City, USA on August 17, 1943. His father, Robert De Niro Sr., is a poet, painter and sculptor. His mother, Virginia Admiral, is also an art salesperson.

His parents ran a salon in Greenwich Village that was popular among intellectuals and artists. They divorced when their children were very young. Robert De Niro was introverted and his face became haggard after entering puberty. He has a brother named John De Niro and a sister named Joan De Niro.

Growing up in Little Italy, he was known as Bobby Milk because of his pale complexion, and at age ten he made his first stage appearance as the Cowardly Lion in a local version of The Wizard of Oz.

Robert De Niro attended PS 41, a public elementary school in Manhattan, until the sixth grade. At the age of 10, he made his school debut as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz after receiving acting training at the Drama Studio. He later attended Elizabeth Irving High School in the Little Red Schoolhouse for seventh and eighth grades.

Robert De Niro was then admitted to the High School of Music and Art for the ninth grade, but he stayed there only for a short time before transferring to the public junior high school IS 71 (Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School). He received his high school education at McBurney School and Rhodes Preparatory School.

He found acting as a way to overcome his shyness and developed a strong interest in film, so he dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue acting. He continued his acting studies at HB Studio and Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio.

Robert De Niro also earned a degree from the Stella Adler Conservatory of Music, where he was exposed to Stanislavski’s teaching methods.

As a young actor he was influenced by the performances of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Greta Garbo, Geraldine Page and Kim Stanley, among others.

Profession

Robert De Niro’s first paid role was in Anton Chekhov’s The Bear when he was 16. He was obsessed with acting. He missed graduating from high school by just a few credits and studied method acting under Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. He spent the next 14 years acting off-Broadway, in dinner theaters, on tour, and occasionally in TV commercials and shorts. His film career began under the direction of Brian De Palma.

The Wedding Party, Greetings, and Hello, Mom! were all unknown, low-budget films that he cast young New Yorkers in. Robert De Niro played the main character of a draft dodger in the film Greetings. Actress Shelley Winters quickly took him in as her own. She helped him land a role in the low-budget film Bloody Mom, directed by Roger Corman. He played Mama Buck, one of the notorious serial killers. Robert De Niro spent weeks in the Ozark Mountains practicing his Arkansas dialect as part of his preparation.

He then starred in several critically acclaimed films, such as Jennifer on My Mind, Born to Win, and The Gangster Who Can’t Shoot. Although the film received poor reviews, some critics began to recognize his performance. Robert De Niro, who was 30 years old at the time, finally received global acclaim in 1973 with two outstanding performances. In Slow Drum, he played a baseball player on the verge of death.

Robert De Niro was not athletic and had never played baseball, but through relentless preparation, careful observation of real and fictional players, and reading baseball books, he created a convincing performance. Later that year, Robert De Niro made his first appearance in Mean Streets, one of many collaborations with director Martin Scorsese, a contemporary of Robert De Niro who also grew up on New York’s Lower East Side. He played a nervous, short-tempered teenage hooligan in the film. His performance was very real. According to biographer David Thomson, the image looked like a hooligan who had walked off the street, as if to announce how out of control he was.

Robert De Niro played the young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s hugely successful film The Godfather: Part II in 1974. He spent weeks learning the Sicilian dialect and tried to imitate the accent and mannerisms of Marlon Brando, who played the older Corleone in the first Godfather film.

Film critic Pauline Kael believed that Robert De Niro was perfect for the role of young Brando because he possessed the physical courage, grace, and intuition necessary to be a successful actor. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this breakthrough performance, in which he used only 17 words of English. He continued to receive critical acclaim for his role as taxi driver Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver in 1976. Robert De Niro lost 35 pounds and frequently listened to the diary recordings of killer Arthur Bremer, who shot presidential candidate George Wallace in 1972, to prepare for the role.

He also obtained a provisional driver’s license and drove a taxi in New York for a few weeks. The controversial film is revered for Robert De Niro’s courageous, unsettling performance. David Thomson believes that his refusal to oversimplify is the essence of his performance. He never chooses wizards or sacred beasts.

The long, stand-alone sequence creates a confessional atmosphere for the audience. Robert De Niro improvised the scene, playing with a gun and practicing his bluff in front of a mirror. He then attempts the iconic line: “Are you talking to me?” This phrase has become a common phrase in the United States and has since become a symbol of white male anger and an attitude that is tired and will not stand it anymore.
