Early life
On February 19, 1959, Roger Stokoe Goodell was born in Jamestown, New York, to United States Senator Charles Ellsworth Goodell and his first wife, Jean (Rice) Goodell in Buffalo, New York.
Goodell graduated from Bronxville High School, where he captained all three teams as a senior and was named the school’s athlete of the year as a three-sport star in football, basketball and baseball.
Roger Goodell was unable to play college football due to an injury. Goodell earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington & Jefferson College in 1981 and then pursued a career as a football player.
Career
Roger began his NFL career as an unpaid intern, despite his family’s connections and his wealthy background. He is the son of the late Charles Goodell, a former New York congressman and U.S. Senator.
In 1987, Goodell was appointed assistant to the president of the National Football League, and he continued to hold various football-related and business-related positions before being appointed executive vice president and chief operating officer of the NFL in 2001.
He is responsible for the league’s football and refereeing operations, as well as overseeing the league’s corporate functions as COO. He is also the president of NFL Ventures. During his time as NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell received the 2014 Distinguished Civilian Service Award for his contributions to the U.S. Military community. The NFL Europe Spring League was founded in 1995.
He had five of the six teams headquartered in Germany since 2004, which Goodell closed after the 2007 season. In 2007, Goodell announced a revised NFL Personal Conduct Policy.
The NFL also fined Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson five games and $100,000 that same year, and New England Patriots quarterback Rodney Harrison was suspended four games without pay.
Goodell has fined players for on-field misconduct in addition to suspending them. Goodell released evidence in 2012 that New Orleans Saints players and coaches had set up a bounty program to compensate players who harmed opponents.
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season by Roger. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt and general manager Mickey Loomis were both fined for eight games.
The Saints were fined the maximum $500,000 by the league and had their second-round pick revoked. Goodell said he would not punish the players until the NFLPA investigation into the incident was complete.
Roger also served during the NFL lockout. He conducted conference calls with season ticket holders during the 2011 NFL lockout to review the collective bargaining agreement and address questions.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for four games by the NFL for allegedly knowing about team personnel deflating. His suspension was overturned by the NFLPA in 2015. The NFL announced that Roger Goodell would preside over Brady’s appeal hearing, although they requested a third neutral arbitrator.
In 2015, Judge Berman overturned Brady’s four-game suspension, citing a lack of due process. Judge Berman cited Article 46 of the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as evidence that the league had acted unfairly.
The ban on Brady was reinstated in 2016 after the NFL appealed. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL owners announced a new policy in 2018 requiring all players to stand or remain in the locker room during the national anthem.
Roger Goodell later walked back this stance in the wake of renewed Black Lives Matter protests following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and has been a supporter since.
