Ross Duffer was born on February 15, 1984. He grew up in Durham, North Carolina, with his identical twin brother Matt Duffer. They were very close from a young age. He and his brother started filming with a Hi8 video camera.
He and his brother attended Duke School for Children, a suburban private school, and then Charles E. Jordan High School, a public school in Durham.
