Early life and education
Ruona J. Meyer was born in 1982 in Benin City, Nigeria. She is the daughter of Rachel and the daughter of Godwin Agbroko. Godwin, a Nigerian journalist, was tragically assassinated on December 22, 2006, but had previously won awards for his work, including the PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award year 1997.
Meyer has four siblings, although their names are not made public. She completed a postgraduate degree at Wits University in South Africa, graduating with honors, and also blogged for the university’s journalism department during this time.

Meyer began her journalism career with her first byline for the This Day newspaper in Lagos, Nigeria, on June 12, 2003. Since then, she has collaborated with several prominent Nigerian journalists, including including Simon Kolawole, Paul Ibe, Ijeoma Nwogwugwu, Kadaria Ahmed, and Dele Olojede, founder of the now defunct 234Next newspaper.
Meyer’s investigative reporting brought her significant recognition. In 2013, she was named Nigeria’s Investigative Journalist of the Year.
