Early life and education
Subramaniam Iswaran was born on 14 June 1962 in Chennai, India. He later moved to Singapore where he was raised by his parents, whose names are not publicly known but who prefer to be called Mr. and Mrs. Subramaniam.
It is unclear whether Iswaran has any siblings as their names have not been released to the media. Iswaran attended Saint Andrew’s College and National Community College of Singapore before completing a first-class honours degree in economics at the University of Adelaide in Australia.

Career
Subramaniam Iswaran had an extensive career before entering politics. He held senior positions in the private and public sectors, including roles as Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer at Temasek Holdings (2003–2006), Director of International Trade at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), and Director of Strategic Development at Singapore Technologies (1996–1998).
Iswaran made his political debut in the 1997 general election. He contested as a member of the four-member People’s Action Party (PAP) group in West Coast GRC and won with 70.14% of the vote, becoming a Member of Parliament. From 2004 to 2006, he served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
In 2006, Iswaran was appointed Minister for Trade and Industry. After the 2020 general election, he continued to serve as Minister for Communications and Information.
Following a cabinet reshuffle in May 2021, Iswaran became Minister for Transport while retaining his position as Minister for Trade Relations.
