Sabrina Carpenter Admits She Struggled to Release ‘Espresso’ as a Single: ‘There Were So Many Questions’

Sabrina Carpenter revealed that she was “alone” in wanting to release “Espresso” as the lead single from her upcoming sixth album, “Short N’ Sweet”.

“Espresso”, released on April 11, became Carpenter’s first song to reach the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and her first to reach number one in the UK, Ireland and Australia.

However, the 25-year-old singer-actress said in a new interview that “powerful people” were initially hesitant to release the song.

“I was completely alone in wanting to release ‘Espresso,’” Carpenter told Variety. “Not necessarily from my immediate team. But from the ‘powers that be.’”

“There was a lot of question about whether it was reasonable. But in the end they believed in me, and I’m so glad I believed in myself at that time,” she added.

Imran Majid, co-CEO of Carpenter’s current label Island Records, has praised the singer’s “instinct and creative vision”.

“It’s no coincidence that everything has turned out exactly the way she always wanted. Sabrina’s creative instincts and vision are incredible,” Majid told the publication. “She’s always thinking 10 steps ahead of the market.”

A certified smash hit, “Espresso” spent a month at No. 1 in the UK earlier this year, making it the fourth biggest song of the year in the country, according to the Official Charts Company.

The European leg of the tour is scheduled to begin in Dublin, Ireland, on March 3. It will then travel to the UK, France, Germany, Belgium and Amsterdam, with an additional date scheduled at London’s The O2.

Before performing in Europe, however, Carpenter will embark on the “Short n’ Sweet” tour in North America first. The tour will kick off on September 23 in Columbus, Ohio and conclude nearly two months later on November 15 in Los Angeles.

Carpenter also just released a new song, “Slim Pickins,” featuring Jack Antonoff.
