Samantha Stosur, a professional tennis player, is from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, where she was born on March 30, 1984. Her parents, Tony Stosur (father) and Diane Stosur (mother), raised her along with her two brothers, Dominic and Daniel.
Samantha’s Polish roots can be traced back to her grandfather. Unfortunately, when she was six years old, a severe flood destroyed their family home and business on the Gold Coast, forcing them to move to Adelaide to start over.
Samantha Stosur has gone to Helensvale State High School, Queensland Academy of Sportand Australian Institute of Sport before becoming a professional tennis player.
Career
In 2005, Samantha Stosur had a breakthrough year, winning her first two WTA titles in singles and doubles. She also had a memorable run to the Australian Open mixed doubles final, partnering Scott Draper.
The following year was even more remarkable. Stosur won her first two Grand Slam titles in doubles at the French Open and the US Open with Lisa Raymond. On top of that, she impressed in singles, reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.
But the pinnacle of her career came in 2011. That year, Samantha Stosur won the US Open, claiming her first Grand Slam singles title. Beating Serena Williams in the final was a historic moment, making her the first Australian woman to win the US Open singles title since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980. Stosur’s talent also shone through with quarter-final appearances at the Australian Open and French Open.
In 2023, after reaching the Australian Open doubles final with Zhang Shuai, Samantha Stosur said goodbye to professional tennis. During her career, she won an impressive 40 WTA titles, including nine singles, 28 doubles and three mixed doubles. With eight Grand Slam finals, she is worthy of being inducted into the Tennis Australia Hall of Fame.
