Early life
Sammy Sosa was born in the Dominican Republic on November 12, 1968 in the city of San Pedro de Macorís. He is of part Haitian descent.
Growing up, he was nicknamed “Mikey” by his grandmother. Mikey is what his family and friends call him.
Career
On June 16, 1989, Sosa made his major league debut against the Texas Rangers, wearing number 17 and playing as a left fielder.

In 1998, Sosa and his colleague Mark McGwire gained national fame for their home run hitting prowess while chasing Roger Maris’ home run record.
While playing for the Cubs, he was a seven-time all-star and set several team records.
While playing for the Rangers, he hit his 600th career home run, becoming the fifth player in Major League Baseball history to achieve this feat.
Among foreign-born MLB players, Sosa ranks second all-time in home runs. In 2001, he achieved a major scare by becoming one of only three National League players since 1900 to hit 160 RBIs in a season.
Additionally, he is the only player to hit 60 or more home runs in a season three times.
