Sarina Wiegman’s career
Sarina had a successful career playing in women’s soccer. She won the KNVB Cup with KFC ’71 in 1987 and became an NCAA champion with the North Carolina Tar Heels in 1989. Wiegman described her time at North Carolina as a quality time, unlike the situation in the Netherlands where women were required to work outside of soccer. After retiring in 2003 due to pregnancy, she became a physical education teacher at Segbroek College.
Wiegman won 104 caps for the Netherlands, scoring three goals. She made her debut at the age of 17 and played in several matches, including the FIFA Women’s Invitation Tournament and the European Championship. In 2001, she became the first Dutch footballer to earn 100 caps. Wiegman retired after playing her last international match in June 2001.
