Early life and education
Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, known by her stage name Saweetie, was born in Santa Clara, California, USA on July 2, 1993. Her father, Trinidad Valentin, is of Filipino and Chinese descent, while her mother, Johnny Harper, is African-American.
Saweetie grew up in Sacramento, California, and attended Merrill F. West High School in Tracy. She later graduated from Monterey Trails High School in Elk Grove. At the age of 13, she began writing music.
After graduating from high school, Saweetie continued her education at San Diego State University, where she studied Communications and Business, before transferring to the University of Southern California, where she completed her studies and earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communications.
After graduating from college, Saweetie focused all her energy on her music career.

In mid-September 2018, Saweetie began pursuing Quavo, a rapper from the now-defunct band Migos. They were first spotted together at New York Fashion Week. Later, in March 2021, Saweetie tweeted through her social media accounts that she was no longer in a relationship with Quavo.
She also mentioned on social media that Quavo had cheated on her, writing:Gifts don’t heal scars, and love isn’t real when intimacy is given to other women” In late March 2021, a video showed the two men engaging in a physical altercation that allegedly took place in 2020.

Saweetie began posting short raps on her Instagram account in 2012. In one video, she rapped to the beat of the song “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)” by American rapper Khia, which eventually became “Icy Grl.”
The song was uploaded to her SoundCloud in the summer of 2017, catching the attention of Max Gousse, a renowned producer and A&R executive who later became her manager. The video went viral and, as of June 2020, has amassed 100 million views on YouTube.

My Type peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Saweetie’s first top 40 hit. A remix of the song featuring Jhené Aiko and City Girls was released on August 23, 2019. In September 2019, PrettyLittleThing and Saweetie launched a 59-piece clothing collection called PrettyLittleThing x Saweetie.
