Early life

Sisi Khampepe was born in Soweto, South Africa, on January 8, 1957. TheCityCeleb editorial team was unable to ascertain details about her upbringing, siblings, and parents at the time of writing this post.

However, in 1980, she received a B-Proc from the University of Zululand. In 1982, she received an LLM from Harvard Law School in Boston, Massachusetts.

She was called to the Bar in 1985 and worked in private practice at Bowman Gilfillan, specialising in employment law. She was appointed to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995. She also served as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions at the National Prosecuting Authority from 1999 to 2001.

Career

Sisi Khampepe began her legal career as a solicitor at the Industrial Aid Society, where she worked during her vacations from 1979 to 1980. She was exposed to the horrific working conditions that black people faced in this country. From 1981 to 1983, she worked as a solicitor at the Legal Resources Centre.

In 1983, she joined Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys as a Candidate Attorney. After being called to the bar in 1985, she founded her own law firm, SV Khampepe Attorneys. Her law firm is known for defending workers who are subject to indigent and unfair labor laws. Hawkers, Civic and Black Consumer Union are among the other human rights organizations she represents.

Sisi Khampepe’s firm is one of the few black labour law firms in the country, representing unions affiliated with both Nactu and Cosatu.

Sisi Khampepe served as national legal advisor to SACAWU. She also served as pre-union administrator for FIET and ICFTU.

In 1995, the late President Nelson Mandela appointed her as a TRC Commissioner, and the following year she joined the TRC Amnesty Commission. From September 1998 to December 1999, she worked for the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sisi Khampepe was appointed to the Supreme Court as a judge in December 2000. Former President Thabo Mbeki also nominated her to head the Commission of Inquiry that investigated the mandate and position of the Special Operations Bureau from April 2005 to February 2006. Former President Thabo Mbeki also appointed her to oversee Zimbabwe’s 2004 elections.

Don McKinnon, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, appointed her to the Commonwealth Observer Group for the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Uganda in February 2006.

From 2005 to April 2010, Sisi Khampepe served as Vice President of the National Council of Correctional Services. She was appointed to the Constitutional Court as a judge in October 2009.
