Early life and education

Sista Afia, also known as Francisca Gawugah, was born on 8 November 1991 in Kumasi, Ghana to Perpetual Duncan-Williams and Gawugah Eshun. Although originally from Swedru in the Central Region of Ghana, she grew up in Santasi, Fankyenebra, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, and spent her early years in Kumasi and Accra.

At the age of 15, she moved to the United Kingdom (UK) to pursue her studies and eventually obtained a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Nursing from the University of Nottingham. However, she decided to pursue her passion for music. She returned to Ghana in 2015 to launch her career, becoming famous for hit singles such as Jeje featuring Shatta Wale and Slay Queen.

Apart from her music career, Sista Afia has also ventured into business, opening a restaurant and a shisha bar in Accra. Her education began at the Pastor John Teye Memorial Institute in Accra, but due to her mother’s absence, she completed her studies at the Angel Educational Complex in Kumasi.

Today, Sista Afia is a qualified nurse in the UK and a successful musician and entrepreneur, leaving her mark in the healthcare and entertainment industries.

Career

Bisa Kdei, a Ghanaian Highlife performer, discovered Sista Afia in London, UK, after she was introduced by her former manager (also in London). After studying nursing in the UK, singer Jeje returned to Ghana in 2015 to launch her music career.

Bisa Kdei, a highlife performer, has inspired and nurtured her as a musician since the beginning of her career. She is signed to BK Records and Ace Kandi Records. One of her earlier releases is a stunning collaboration with Bisa Kdei on Kro kro No, written and composed by Bisa Kdei.

Sista Afia rose to prominence in Ghana after her hit single Jeje, featuring African Dancehall King Shatta Wale. She first released a new rap song titled WMT (Wo Maame Tw3) on April 22, 2020, which was said to be a diss track to the likes of Sister Derby (Sister Deborah), Wendy Shay or anyone else the underground music scene is associated with.

On April 27, 2020, Freda Rhymz responded to Sista Afia’s WMT with a tune titled KMT (Komot), which also served as an Eno Barony diss track.

Eno Barony then released her rap single, Rap Goddess, on May 1, 2020, in response to both herself and Freda Rhymz. She returned with a bang on May 5, 2020, with the release of You Got Nerves, which impressed Eno Barony and Freda Rhymz.

She followed up Eno Barony’s surprise release of Argument Done on May 8, 2020. Eno Barony’s Done, filled with witty banter for Medikal—who is credited with writing the lyrics to Sista Afia’s You Got Nerves—certainly lived up to expectations by finally settling the controversy.

On May 11, 2020, Freda Rhymz released Point Of Correction to address Sista Afia’s You Got Nerves and Eno Barony’s Argument Done. Following the release of Point Of Correction, Freda Rhymz and Sista Afia engaged in a physical fight at the TV3 Network premises.

Nana Ama McBrown was the mediator in the argument between Sista Afia and Freda Rhymz on the show United Showbiz, aired on UTV.
