Born in Edo State, Nigeria, Scalise was raised by his mother, an unskilled worker, on April 1, 1991 in Jos, Kaduna State, Nigeria.
While Scalise was growing up, his mother ran a tape store, which was ultimately where Scalise developed his interest in music.
Scales received his tertiary education at the University of Jos and Leader City University in Ibadan. According to records, he dropped out of the University of Jos in his junior year and later graduated from Leader City University with a degree in Office Management and Technology.
Profession
Scales developed an interest in music while frequenting his mother’s cassette shop. While attending the University of Jos (UNIJOS), he met producers Jeremiah Gyang and Jesse Jagz. He participated in the Zain Tru Search competition held at the University of Jos and won the North Central region championship of the competition.
Scalise left UNIJOS in his junior year and enrolled at Ryde City University, where he obtained a degree in Office Management and Technology. His debut single “Must Shine” was released to critical acclaim.
In a 2013 interview with Today, Scalise described himself as an artist whose music is influenced by his surroundings. His 2009 release “Heading for a Grammy” was inspired by Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks.” His experiences at the time helped shape the song, an anthem of self-empowerment.
In 2009, Scalise signed a record deal with EME after meeting Banky W. He released the singles “Mukulu” and “Keresimesi” simultaneously. Both songs were produced by Sarz and released by the band. The music video for the latter song was directed by Clarence Peters and uploaded to YouTube on November 28, 2011.
Scalise was one of the main performers on EME’s debut album, Empire Mates State of Mind (2012). He collaborated with Banky W, Wizkid, Shaydee, Niyola and DJ Xclusive on five of the album’s seven singles. He also joined some of the aforementioned performers on EME’s US tour, which began on July 4, 2012 and ended on September 2.
EME has performed in many cities including Houston, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, New York City, Providence, Calgary, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Skales was Wizkid’s support act during his London tour in 2012. On October 17, 2013, he performed at the 2013 Felabration Concert, an annual concert dedicated to Fela Kuti.
In February 2014, La Vanguardia reported that Scalise had left EME after his four-year record contract expired. EME executives felt they were not getting a return on their investment in Scalise and therefore refused to renew his contract.
