Early life and education
Sonny John Moore, aka Skrillex, has a fascinating backstory that begins with him being adopted at birth by family friends of his biological parents. He learned of this when he was 15, which may have added complexity to his already complicated identity. Born on January 12, 1988, in the Highland Park neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles, he grew up in San Francisco’s Forest Hill neighborhood after his family moved there when he was two years old.
Interestingly, his mother, Francis Moore, worked in business, while his father, Scott Moore, was an entrepreneur. Skrillex attended elementary school until he was 9 or 10 before being sent to boarding school in the Mojave Desert. However, he left the program at 14 due to bullying and was then homeschooled, eventually dropping out at 16.
Skrillex found solace in the music scene as a teenager, attending punk shows in the Mexican-American neighborhoods of East and South Los Angeles. It was here that he discovered his passion for music, and later found his way to the electronic music clubs of downtown Silver Lake and Echo Park. The unique combination of these experiences may have contributed to Skrillex’s distinct sound and creative vision.
Personal life
Skrillex, a talented music producer and DJ, has had his fair share of romantic relationships. He dated British pop star Ellie Goulding in 2012, something he only revealed in an interview three years later. In addition to Ellie Goulding, Skrillex has also been linked to a number of other women, including Kai, Charmaine Olivia, and Emily Gauthreaux.
Despite his parents’ involvement with the Church of Scientology, Skrillex has never shown any interest in the religion, instead focusing on his musical career. He often cites music as his primary source of spiritual fulfillment and creative expression.
However, Skrillex also faced difficult times in his personal life, including the sudden death of his mother, Francis Moore, in June 2015. Her passing had a profound impact on him and his family; he has since taken time to reflect on her life and legacy.
Career
In the early 2000s, Skrillex’s career took an unexpected turn when he was approached by Matt Good of From First to Last. The band had just signed to Epitaph Records and were looking for a lead guitarist to record their debut album. He accepted the offer and traveled to Georgia to join the group. There, three producers – Derrick Thomas, Eric Dale and McHale Butler – noticed his impressive singing ability and offered him the role of lead singer instead, with him taking over on guitar.
Skrillex thus began his career with From First to Last, which led to the release of their debut album Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count in 2004. The album was a commercial success and spawned several hit singles, including Note to Self and Ride the Wings of Pestilence. The band embarked on several successful tours, including the Vans Warped Tour and the Dead by Dawn tour, and recorded their follow-up album Heroine with producer Ross Robinson, which was released in March 2006.
However, vocal issues forced Skrillex to withdraw from the band’s tours. He underwent successful surgery but ultimately decided to leave From First to Last to pursue a solo music career. His last performance with the band was in their hometown of Orlando at The House of Blues while they were on tour with Atreyu.
In 2008, Skrillex headlined the second annual AP tour, which included All Time Low, The Rocket Summer, The Matches, and Forever the Sickest Kids. The tour was a huge success, and all the bands performing were featured on the cover of Alternative Press Magazine. 100 Bands You Need to Know During the tour, he released a digital EP called Gypsyhook, which included three songs and four remixes.
Skrillex’s solo career continued to thrive, and in 2013 he announced that he would be releasing a new LP in the summer. Over the years, he has collaborated with a variety of artists and groups, including K-pop girl group 4Minute, for whom he wrote and arranged their first song, Hate. He also reunited with From First to Last, releasing songs like Make War and Surrender with the band.
