Skull and Bone Development
Skull and Bones is a video game produced by Ubisoft Singapore. They got the idea from the cool naval battles in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. They started working on it in 2013, thinking it would be an add-on for Black Flag. But then they decided to make it their own game because the technology they were using was outdated.

Making games isn’t easy. They keep changing their ideas about what it should be. At first, they wanted it to happen in the Caribbean, but then they decided it would be cooler in a man-made place called Hyperborea. Eventually, they settled in East Africa and Southeast Asia. They also couldn’t figure out what the gameplay was supposed to look like. They tried focusing on exploring the ocean and fighting ships, but eventually gave up on the idea. Instead, they adopted a survival game style, a bit like Rust.
Many problems were encountered during the development process. People have different ideas, managers have a hard time keeping things on track, and the game has no clear direction. So they spent more money than planned – over $120 million! They first presented Skull and Bones in 2017. They say it will be available for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with special content for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. They also announced a program called Code Keepers to gain feedback from players.
But the game kept being postponed. It was supposed to release in 2018, then 2019, then 2020, then got delayed again and again. After many delays, it is finally coming in 2024. Even though it took a long time to make and cost a lot of money, Ubisoft says it’s worth $70 because it’s a big game with a lot of extras to do, although they don’t think they’ll make back all the money.
