Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
After Sonic passes out from an explosion, Tom insists that he can save the hedgehog. Tom takes Sonic to see his girlfriend Maddie (Tika Sumpter), who is a veterinarian. The comedy is emphasized with its question of whether actor Dwayne ”
The Rock
“Johnson is president, as he suggests that Sonic has been living in his own comic reality.
These questions reference the typical ones that would be asked of someone after a suspected head injury. Baseline questions like these, which establish the location, year, and social awareness, help determine how serious the injury might be. Comically, Sonic asks all of these questions of himself, in rapid succession, suggesting that he is aware of the questions he needs to ask, but not of his surroundings. The comedy is emphasized by his question of whether actor Dwayne “The Rock“Johnson is president, as he suggests that Sonic has been living in his own comic reality.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
In the first scene where Sonic and Tom team up, they talk in the car and exchange information about Sonic’s origins. Halfway through their conversation, Sonic looks out the window and sees a sign advertising the world’s largest rubber ball. He asks Tom to stop the car so they can see the ball, but Tom insists that they focus.
As Tom continues talking and trying to remain serious, Sonic disappears from the front seat and reappears a second later. When he returns to the car, he is holding miniature rubber balls and produce. The rubber band ball scene is good at establishing the personalities of the two characters. It shows Sonic’s disobedience and naivety. It also demonstrates Tom’s realism and the importance of keeping Sonic grounded.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

After Sonic yells, “What’s going on?!“Tails explains Knuckle’s history and why he wants Sonic.
After some evasive maneuvers, Knuckles catches up to them. Tails comes up with a new idea to get rid of the Echidna and asks Sonic if he trusts him. Sonic, the realist of the situation, says:Of course not. I just met you.“Despite Sonic’s protests, Tails takes the wheel and steers them toward a cliff. They don’t have much time to discuss this before Shadow speaks up, reminding them that he is their common enemy.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
At first, Tom is hesitant to help Sonic, as he doesn’t understand what Sonic needs or whether he poses a threat. Tom asks Sonic to leave his car, hoping that he imagined their entire interaction and that the blue hedgehog isn’t real. Sonic relents and gets out of the car, though he is still evidently worried about finding San Francisco without Tom’s help. Sonic runs off into the distance.
He soon returns to Tom’s car, now with a fish and seaweed on his head. He says that he went west as Tom told him, which led him to the Pacific Ocean. He beats Tom up for leaving him alone, trying to convince him to change his mind. Sonic blames Tom for shooting him and leaving him stranded on Earth, and tries to appeal to him. He asks for help in getting to San Francisco, as he is not equipped to navigate this planet alone.
4. “I feel like Vin Diesel! It’s all about family, Tom.”
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
In another scene in their car, Tom and Sonic have to escape from Dr. Robotnik. When Tom realizes that he will need to help fend off Robotnik, he tells Sonic that he put the car on cruise control, making it easier for him to drive. Sonic references Vin Diesel from Fast and furious franchise as he gets behind the wheel. He tells Tom that he feels like the actor, whose character often takes part in car chases.
His next line references family, a prominent theme in the franchise. He attempts to quote Diesel, saying: “It’s all about family.“Interestingly, Sonic knows this reference, considering he’s from another planet. Devising ways to defeat Robotnik, Sonic’s driving skills leave much to be desired, but he still manages to escape the evil doctor anyway.
3 “Return to sender!”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
As Tails and Sonic explore a Siberian ice cave following the map, Robotnik and Knuckles show up to stop them. While there is some creature-on-creature violence, Robotnik joins in with some weapons. He fires a missile at Sonic and Tails, but they put up a good fight. Sonic is able to grab Robotnik’s missile and change its trajectory.
The line only appears in the trailer, a quick joke to show off Sonic’s brashness. In the movie, Sonic doesn’t say anything, but moves in slow motion during the stunt. The missing line doesn’t detract from the rest of the movie’s humor, and Sonic’s fighting maneuver is still just as cool and effective, as it destroys the ice cave and helps them escape.
2 “It turns out that with great power comes great power-hungry guys!”
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
In Sonic’s initial voice, he explains his origins. The flashback shows the owl Longclaw raising Sonic on a beautiful island. Although he could use his super speed anywhere, he was initially ordered to keep his powers hidden. Obviously, Sonic breaks these rules, claiming that he is too fast to be seen.
The quote is a parody of Spider-Man’s motto: ”
With great power comes great responsibility
.”
However, Sonic quickly becomes mistaken. While inside the house talking to Longclaw, the echidnas are seen outside, wielding weapons. Sonic claims that they are power-hungry and envy his superpowers. Sonic turns a serious and dangerous enemy attack into a light, comedic joke.
1 “This is MY power and I will no longer use it to run away! I will use it to protect my friends!”

As he regains his energy from Robotnik, Sonic gains confidence in himself. He no longer fights for himself. Sonic decides that he wants to save his human friends.
This line is an important and fitting ending to the first Sonic movie. It shows that Sonic has learned to appreciate those around him and care about others. It also sets up the subsequent movies, as there is now an established reason why Sonic would want to stay on Earth. Although it is one of his less funny lines, the line still sets up essential character development for the first Sonic movie. Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
