Early life and education

Stan Lee was born to Romanian-born Jewish immigrant parents Celia (née Solomon) and Jack Lieber on December 28, 1922, at the corner of West 98th Street and West End Avenue in Manhattan, New York City.

Stan Lee was born and raised in a Jewish family. After the Great Depression, his father, a trained tailor, had little work time, so the family moved to Fort Washington Avenue in Washington Heights, Manhattan.

Stan Lee’s brother Larry Lieber is his only sibling. During his childhood, he was deeply influenced by literature and movies, especially the heroic movies starring Errol Flynn.

When Stan Lee was a teenager, his family lived in an apartment at 1720 University Avenue in the Bronx. The apartment was on the third floor. Their parents slept on a fold-out couch, and Stan Lee and his brother shared a room.

Stan Lee attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx.

Profession

In 1939, Stan Lee, with the support of his uncle Robbie Solomon, became an assistant to pulp magazine and comic book publisher Martin Goodman’s fledgling Timely Comics subsidiary.

By the 1960s, Time Comics had evolved into Marvel Comics, and he was officially recruited by Time Comics editor-in-chief Joe Simon, whose relative Jean was Goodman’s wife.

At first, his duties were routine. He had to make sure the ink bottle was filled with ink, because cartoonists at the time would dip their pens into the ink. He would also bring them lunch, check their work, and clean up the pencil marks on the last few pages.

Stan Lee made his comic book debut in Captain America Comics #3 (May 1941 cover) with the title “Captain America Thwarts Traitor’s Revenge” under the pen name Stan Lee (a variation of his original name “Stanley”), which he eventually adopted as his legal name.

Stan Lee later stated in his autobiography and other sources that he was so humiliated by the low social status of comic books that he created a pseudonym so that no one would associate his real name with comic books.

In late 1941, after disagreements with Goodman, Simon and his creative partner Jack Kirby resigned, and the 30-year-old publisher appointed Stan Lee, who was not yet 19, as interim editor. The teenager had a talent for the business, and for most of that time he served as editor-in-chief and comics art director until he succeeded Goodman as publisher in 1972.

Stan Lee has made cameo appearances in several Marvel films and television shows, including shows set in the MCU. Several of these cameos are self-aware, occasionally hinting at Lee’s involvement in the development of specific characters. He also made a brief appearance as himself in the 2018 DC Comics film Teen Titans Go! The Movie.

Following Stan Lee’s death, Marvel Studios implemented a new policy prohibiting the use of his archival material in future films, with Avengers: Endgame (2019) being his final appearance; the film was released a few months after his death.
