Becoming a Jedi is meant to be a life-long decision, but there are several instances throughout the Star Wars saga of Jedi leaving the Jedi Order for a variety of reasons. Some fall to the dark side, but some simply become disillusioned with the Jedi’s ideals or decide to prioritize other commitments. Leaving the Jedi doesn’t necessarily mean that someone has become a Sith, though it can be a slippery slope when the pull of the dark side is involved in a Jedi’s decision to step away.

Though the original Star Wars trilogy takes place during a time that had almost no living Jedi active in the galaxy, the prequels and other expansions on the series provide a fuller look at the Jedi as an institution. This allows the story to explore the finer details of what it took to become a Jedi, but it also allows Star Wars to explore the question of whether someone might leave the Order willingly. Here are 10 Jedi who left the Order, and why.

10 The Lost Twenty Served As Examples To The Order

The Jedi’s Quitters

The Lost Twenty were Jedi throughout the Order’s history who stepped away from the Order for various reasons. They are briefly mentioned in a deleted scene in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, but only as a group. When Obi-Wan visits the Jedi archives, the statues commemorating each lost member of the Jedi Order can be seen among the other reference tools. Though they aren’t mentioned by name, the likeness of Count Dooku is clearly among them.

The Lost Twenty do not seem to be regarded with malice by the Jedi. Instead, they seem to be representative of the Jedi’s desire to use them as examples. The Lost Twenty were used to show that no Jedi is exempt from having doubts and that without true devotion to the Order and the Code, those doubts could bring down even very highly trained Jedi Masters.

9 Kirak Infil’a Took The Barash Vow

Choosing Between Commitments

Close

In a strange contrast to the Jedi’s role as peacekeepers in the galaxy, Kirak Infil’a was known singularly for his combat specialization. Fighting became his entire purpose within the Jedi Order while he was an active member, which lasted until just before the fall of the Republic. At some point, Kirak Infil’a took the Barash Vow, which took precedence over his pledge to the Jedi Order. This ultimately allowed him to avoid execution during Order 66.

The Barash Vow was a form of pittance that some Jedi took as a way to focus on their true path. It involved severing ties with all aspects of the Jedi Order beyond a connection to the Force. This might be used as a form of atonement after a grievous misstep, or simply to realign one’s self with the Force. During his years of exile, Obi-Wan Kenobi followed the ways of the Barash Vow.

8 Sora Bulq Fell Into Temptation

A Dark Descent

Close

Sora Bulq’s legacy in the Jedi Order began as one of their top lightsaber instructors. He was renowned as a match for even Mace Windu, and was incredibly powerful in combat. When Mace requested his help with refining his dangerous lightsaber combat style, Vaapad, Sora Bulq slipped closer and closer to the dark side. When the Battle of Geonosis ended, Bulq was left a prisoner of Dooku’s. After several months of captivity, Bulq began to align himself with Dooku.

Bulq committed himself fully to Dooku’s cause, and his once-impressive legacy within the Jedi became one of disappointment and treachery.

When he returned to the Jedi, he became a double agent, taking deliberate steps to sabotage the Jedi whenever he could. Eventually, his betrayal came to light. Bulq committed himself fully to Dooku’s cause, and his once-impressive legacy within the Jedi became one of disappointment and treachery. He was ultimately killed by Quinlan Voss, another double agent – though Vos made the choice to return to the Jedi.

As one of the more reckless and brutal of the Jedi, it’s no surprise that Quinlan Vos would defect from the Jedi Order at some point in his career. He was a powerful asset to the Republic during the Clone Wars, though his tactics sometimes worried the more traditional of the Jedi. In the later years of the war, Vos became obsessed with discovering the identity of the Sith Lord who was pulling the strings of the conflict. He eventually lost himself to the dark side and became Dooku’s apprentice.

Teaming up with Asajj Ventress, Dooku’s former apprentice who was now working as a bounty hunter, Vos fell in love with her. 2 Count Dooku Was Tempted By Palpatine

Misguided Intentions

Close

Count Dooku was a talented and powerful Jedi, having been trained by Yoda. He was becoming disheartened with the Order’s connections to the Republic and was feeling dissatisfied with his role in the way things were working. As the tensions between the Trade Confederation and the Republic built, Dooku decided it was time for him to leave the Order and return to his home planet, where he had recently reclaimed the title of Count from his brother. Unfortunately, Sheev Palpatine had already taken note of the growing darkness within Dooku, and would soon pull him to the dark side.

As Darth Tyrannus, Dooku became a much more serious threat to the Jedi than they originally expected. What began as a benign desire to serve his home planet turned into Dooku becoming Sidious’ right hand during the Clone Wars, orchestrating the creation of the clones and the deaths of many Jedi. Dooku believed himself to be the galaxy’s Chosen One, only realizing his mistake when Sidious had Anakin, Dooku’s obvious replacement, execute him.

He somehow discovered the existence of the Sith, and became Palpatine’s apprentice after the death of Darth Maul. 1 Anakin Skywalker Is The Most Fearsome Former Jedi

The Chosen One

Close

Likely the most famous of all the defected Jedi, Anakin Skywalker was a celebrated Jedi Knight before becoming one of the galaxy’s most feared Sith Lords. From the time he was a child, Anakin struggled with his fear of losing the ones he loved, and the intense Jedi training he was thrown into only amplified that when he was instructed to let his emotional grip on them go. He felt undervalued and mistrusted by the Council, and easily fell prey to the manipulations of Darth Sidious.

When Padmé’s life was on the line, the Jedi were seemingly unable or unwilling to help him, and so Anakin forsake everything he knew. He carried out Order 66, wiping out all the Jedi in the Temple and executing the Separatists on Mustafar before engaging in a duel to the death with his former Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite everything he sacrificed, the path to the dark side was unforgiving, and Padmé died anyway, leaving Anakin broken and full of hate for himself. Fully committed to the Sith, Darth Vader became the most fearsome former Jedi in all of Star Wars.

Conceived by the will of the Force itself, Anakin Skywalker was the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring the Force into balance. Anakin struggled to balance competing attachments to the Jedi Order and his wife Padmé Amidala, and ultimately fell to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. For years he served as Palpatine’s right hand man, but he was ultimately redeemed by the faith of his son, Luke Skywalker. Now a Force Ghost, Anakin continues to act as an agent of balance.
