The main antagonist of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Kylo Ren, was an interesting villain, but there were several parts of his story that didn’t make any sense. Kylo Ren was a very interesting and complex villain. He became the Supreme Leader of the First Order, the villainous successors to the Galactic Empire. Kylo Ren was also a fierce enemy of Rey Skywalker, but he was also the other half of the Force Dyad with her. Kylo Ren was a hugely important part of the Skywalker saga as the last member of the Skywalker family tree, but he didn’t always make sense.

Throughout the sequel trilogy of Star Wars movies, Kylo Ren was, by design, rather inconsistent. He was constantly drawn by both the light and dark sides of the Force, and they pulled him in two different directions. That worked well for his character, but it also introduced quite a few plot holes and confusing moments in Kylo Ren’s story. Quite a few of those plot holes have been filled by stories other than the Star Wars movies, but there are still 10 big things about Kylo Ren that make no sense.

Kylo Ren’s story could have gone in multiple different directions throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Here are 10 examples.

10 Kylo Ren Barely Used The Knights Of Ren

The Knights Of Ren Are A Glorified Search Party In The Rise Of Skywalker

Close

Half of Kylo Ren’s namesake comes from the group he led: the Knights of Ren. They were a group of dark-side warriors who were incredibly important to Kylo Ren’s introduction to the dark side, but the sequel trilogy did not convey that at all. In fact, most of the information about the Knights of Ren comes from the comic series Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren. That series explained that the Knights of Ren were essentially Kylo Ren’s found family after his departure from Luke Skywalker’s Jedi academy, and that they were one of the biggest causes of his fall to the dark side.

If Kylo Ren had this fearsome group of warriors at his disposal from the very beginning, though, why didn’t he use the Knights of Ren more?

The Rise of Kylo Ren also established that the Knights of Ren were extremely competent warriors, yet he barely made use of their skills at any point during the sequel trilogy. Essentially, Kylo Ren only used the Knights of Ren to track down the Sith Wayfinder and Rey. If Kylo Ren had this fearsome group of warriors at his disposal from the very beginning, though, why didn’t he use them more? He could have been much more effective at several points in the sequel trilogy if he actually had the Knights fight with him, rather than using them as a simple search party.

9 Kylo Ren Put Up With Armitage Hux For So Much Longer Than He Needed To

Kylo Ren Hated Hux – So Why Didn’t He Just Kill Him?

Close

General Armitage Hux was used rather inconsistently throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but one part of his character that remained constant was his relationship to Kylo Ren. The two hated each other deeply. They were constantly at odds, with Hux insulting Kylo Ren on multiple occasions, they had opposing views of what was best for the First Order, and they were competing against each other for Snoke’s favor, with Hux even telling Snoke that Kylo Ren was a traitor. The only reason Kylo Ren didn’t simply kill Hux was because Hux was important to Snoke, as he had proven himself useful with Starkiller Base.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, however, all of Kylo Ren’s reasons for keeping Hux alive vanished. He had killed Snoke and taken his place as Supreme Leader. No one would have stopped him from killing Hux at any point in the year between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, yet Kylo Ren stayed his hand. Kylo Ren really had no reason to keep him around that long as well, as Hux had outlived his usefulness: the Battle of Starkiller Base was a massive Resistance victory, and his plan to track their ships through hyperspace ultimately failed to destroy them.

8 Why Didn’t Anakin Skywalker’s Force Ghost Correct Him?

Anakin Skywalker Just Let His Grandson Repeat His Greatest Mistake?

Close

A major motivation for Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side was his legacy as the grandson of Darth Vader. Kylo Ren idolized Vader, and the fact that he was related to one of the most powerful Sith in Star Wars caused some of the conflict that gave Ben his darkness. Vader was an inspiration to Kylo Ren, but Anakin Skywalker could have helped bring back Ben Solo. After his death in Return of the Jedi, Anakin became a Force ghost, and made several appearances to important people from his life, like his son, Luke, and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.

Ahsoka Tano

The apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano was an accomplished Padawan who served during the Clone Wars. Ahsoka left the Jedi after she became disillusioned with the Jedi Council, but returned to serve in the Siege of Mandalore at the end of the Clone Wars. She survived Order 66, becoming a Rebel agent during the Dark Times of the Empire’s reign, and her adventures continue in the New Republic era. Ahsoka was last seen stranded in a distant galaxy, having failed to prevent Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return.

Years after his death, Anakin appeared to Ahsoka and offered her guidance about learning to continue the fight. The fact that Anakin could appear as a Force ghost and dispense wisdom means he could have done the same for Kylo Ren, but for some reason, he didn’t. Anakin’s guidance would have had a huge effect on Kylo Ren, too. If the grandfather he idolized as a symbol of darkness told him to return to the light, there’s a very solid chance he would have listened. Palpatine’s manipulation of Kylo Ren likely had some hand in this, but it’s certainly not a perfect explanation.

7 Why Didn’t Luke Skywalker’s Force Ghost Appear To Kylo Ren?

Luke Skywalker Abandoned Kylo Ren Even In Death

Close

A major theme of The Last Jedi was that Luke Skywalker had given up on himself, but also that he had given up on Kylo Ren. He decided that Ben Solo was gone, and that there was no way he could help bring him back to the light. By the end of the film, however, Luke had found his way back to the fight, and he actively helped Rey and the Resistance. He even continue helping them, as he appeared to Rey as a Force ghost in The Rise of Skywalker. Like his father, though, Luke never tried to contact Kylo Ren as a Force ghost.

Luke Skywalker

The son of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Luke was brought up on the desert planet Tatooine. Initially mentored by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke fired the fateful shot that destroyed the Death Star, and he became a rebel hero. Despite the fears of Obi-Wan and Yoda, Luke’s faith in his father was proved well-founded when Vader returned to the light. With the Emperor defeated, Luke dedicated himself to bringing back the Jedi; his first attempt ended in tragedy due to Palpatine’s manipulations, but Luke’s legacy lives on in Rey.

After the lesson he learned in The Last Jedi, Luke should have tried to help bring his former Padawan back to the light. He clearly understood that there was still good he could do, but he decided to focus his attention solely on Rey. Luke probably wouldn’t have had as drastic of an effect on Kylo Ren as Anakin would have, but he surely could have helped chip away at his commitment to the dark side. At the very least, it would have helped The Rise of Skywalker set up Kylo Ren’s return to the light side.

6 Kylo Ren Could Have Betrayed Snoke Before The Last Jedi

Why Did He Have To Wait For Rey Skywalker’s Help?

Close

One of the most important pieces of character development Kylo Ren experienced in The Last Jedi was his betrayal of Snoke. It was the moment that cemented him as more than “a child in a mask,” and pushed him even further down the path to the dark side. It was also clear that Kylo Ren had been planning to betray his master for years: The Rise of Kylo Ren established that he knew Snoke was using him from the very beginning. Kylo Ren had motivation to kill Snoke for years, but he waited until The Last Jedi to actually do it.

Why Snoke Wanted Kylo Ren To Kill Han Solo (And Why It Didn’t Work)

One of the main plot points of the Star Wars sequels was Snoke wanting Kylo Ren to kill Han Solo. Here is why, and also why his plan did not work.

There was a long period of time when betraying Snoke was impossible because Snoke was still establishing the First Order, but Kylo Ren could have killed him as soon as the First Order was ready to attack. A case could also be made that he needed Rey’s help, both to distract Snoke and to deal with his Elite Praetorian Guard, but Kylo Ren could have used his other allies for that purpose. With the help of the Knights of Ren, Kylo Ren could easily have taken Snoke’s life, yet he didn’t, and there isn’t a tremendous explanation for why he waited so long.

5 Kylo Ren Wears A Helmet Because He’s A Big Darth Vader Fan

Helmets Usually Serve A Purpose In Star Wars – Kylo Ren’s Is Purely Aesthetic

Close

Kylo Ren’s idolization of Darth Vader wasn’t just an influence on his fall to the dark side, it also influenced the way he looked. Dark side users had a few reasons to wear helmets, but none of them applied to Kylo Ren. One was to hide their identity, but the only people Kylo Ren would likely want to hide his identity from already knew he had fallen to the dark side. The other, which was the case for Vader, was to keep them alive, but Kylo Ren’s clearly didn’t. The main purpose of his helmet seems to be that it made him look like Vader.

Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader Split By a Lightning Bolt

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader

Conceived by the will of the Force itself, Anakin Skywalker was the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring the Force into balance. Anakin struggled to balance competing attachments to the Jedi Order and his wife Padmé Amidala, and ultimately fell to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. For years he served as Palpatine’s right hand man, but he was ultimately redeemed by the faith of his son, Luke Skywalker. Now a Force Ghost, Anakin continues to act as an agent of balance.

It’s possible that the helmet was simply meant to intimidate, but Kylo Ren constantly removed his helmet, which defeats the goal of making him appear inhuman. Kylo Ren’s helmet did act as a status symbol that marked him as the leader of the Knights of Ren, but he only needed that status symbol for half of The Rise of Skywalker, and the Knights betrayed him anyway. It seems that Kylo Ren really was just cosplaying as Darth Vader for the entire sequel trilogy. It’s very confusing that his helmet wasn’t explored more, especially after he destroyed it only to rebuild it.

4 Snoke Could Have Taught Kylo Ren How To Fight – And Didn’t

Kylo Ren Lost Several Duels Because Of His Poor Technique

Close

Kylo Ren lost quite a few of his lightsaber duels in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and the reason he lost so often presents a very confusing plot hole. During his training at Luke’s Jedi academy, Kylo Ren learned several different forms of lightsaber combat, but he primarily used three: Djem So, Juyo, and Niman. None of those were particularly effective with his unique crossguard lightsaber, though, and Kylo Ren’s poor lightsaber combat technique caused quite a few of his losses. There was a much more effective lightsaber combat form, though, yet Snoke never taught it to him.

Form II – Makashi, would have given Kylo Ren a tremendous edge in lightsaber duels, if he had known how to use it. Makashi was designed for lightsaber dueling, and it would have allowed Kylo Ren to actually use his crossguards to damage his opponent in combat. It would have been a tremendously useful form to know; if Kylo Ren knew Makashi, he almost certainly would have defeated Rey on Starkiller Base, and most of other duels with her as well. Snoke could easily have taught him and ended the sequel trilogy essentially before it began, but Star Wars never explained why he didn’t.

3 Did Kylo Ren Know Leia Organa Survived In The Last Jedi?

Kylo Ren Thought He Watched His Mother Die

Close

One of the most emotional moments in The Last Jedi was when Leia Organa, Kylo Ren’s mother, was blown into space by a First Order attack. Kylo Ren didn’t pull the trigger himself, but he did watch it happen, a moment which caused him a great deal of emotional turmoil. The Last Jedi introduced Kylo Ren’s hesitance to kill his mother, but it never revisited that idea, and it didn’t firmly establish whether he ever found out she was alive again. He likely knew Leia had survived by The Rise of Skywalker, but it’s never firmly established when he found that out.

Leia Organa

The daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Leia inherited her mother’s political skills and her father’s Force power. She was raised on Alderaan as a member of the royal family, and followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a senator who secretly worked alongside the Rebel Alliance. Alderaan’s destruction changed everything, and Leia became a leader in both the Rebel Alliance and its successor government, the New Republic. She served there for decades, eventually leaving to found the First Order when she sensed its darkness growing. Leia gave much for her ideals, but eventually gave her life to redeem her son Ben.

Created By George Lucas Cast Carrie Fisher , Ingvild Deila , Vivien Lyra Blair First Appearance Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope Died Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise Of Skywalker Alliance Rebel Alliance, New Republic, Resistance

Leia’s supposed death caused quite a bit of distress in Kylo Ren, and it was one of the most important moments in The Last Jedi. It’s odd that the movie wouldn’t show Kylo Ren’s reaction to learning his mother was alive, given how much of the film’s emotional tension rests on her survival. It’s even stranger when considering The Rise of Skywalker, and the massive effect her actual death had on Kylo Ren’s return to the light side.

2 Ben Solo Didn’t Like Being Forced To Pick A Side – Then Picked The Dark Side

Kylo Ren Seemed Pretty Intent On One Side Of The Force In The Sequel Trilogy

Close

A major part of Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side, as detailed in The Rise of Kylo Ren, was the fact that he felt torn between two legacies. On one hand, he was the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, two heroes of the Rebel Alliance. On the other hand, he was the grandson of Darth Vader, one of the galaxy’s greatest villains. He also felt that both Luke and Snoke were trying to push him in a certain direction, and he resented them both for forcing him to choose. That conflict was a major reason Kylo Ren was so impulsive and indecisive.

Kylo Ren didn’t want to pick a side, yet he ended up doing exactly that. He dedicated himself fully to the dark side until the very end of his life. The light side still had a hold on him, which is how he became Ben Solo again, but he pushed it down and suppressed it constantly. For a character who didn’t want to have to choose a side, Kylo Ren picked the dark side rather easily. It’s not clear how being between the light and dark sides of the Force would have worked, but it does seem to contradict a core part of his personality.

1 Why Didn’t Ben Solo Become A Force Ghost?

Ben Solo Redeemed Himself In The Rise Of Skywalker, But Didn’t Get To Come Back

Close

There are so many similarities between Kylo Ren and Darth Vader, and one of the biggest came at the end of their lives. Shortly before he died, Kylo Ren returned to the light side and reclaimed his name as Ben Solo. He then helped Rey battle Palpatine, and after their fight, he transferred his life essence into her and brought her back from the dead. That sacrifice cost Ben his life, but in his final moments, he dedicated himself to the light side, and he became one with the Force, his body disappearing in Rey’s arms.

Making Ben Solo a Force ghost would have brought his story full-circle and brought him closer to his ancestors, but it didn’t happen, for whatever reason.

It was a beautiful end to the story of Ben Solo, but it didn’t have to be the end. Ben could have come back as a Force ghost, just as Anakin had in Return of the Jedi. There have been several Jedi who became Force ghosts without the lessons of the Force Priestesses that Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn had, and Ben could easily have been added to their numbers. Making Ben Solo a Force ghost would have brought his story full-circle and brought him closer to his ancestors, but it didn’t happen, for whatever reason. That’s just one of the many confusing parts of Kylo Ren.

Ben Solo/Kylo Ren

The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Ben was manipulated by Palpatine through the Force for most of his life, influenced toward the dark side of the Force. A misstep by Luke Skywalker ultimately left Ben feeling he had no choice but to embrace the dark side, and he became Kylo Ren, a key figure in the First Order. Kylo Ren’s heart remained deeply divided, however, even after he ascended to become Supreme Leader of the First Order. He was ultimately redeemed by Rey, with whom he shared a remarkable Force bond, and by the love of his parents.
