Star Wars: Dark Forces
Star Wars: Dark Forces is a cool video game made by LucasArts. It was launched in 1995 for computers such as MS-DOS and Mac, and later in 1996 for PlayStation. The story takes place in the Star Wars universe, but before the main movies. You play as Kyle Katarn, a man working for the Rebel Alliance of Good Guys. He discovers a secret plan of the villainous Galactic Empire. The purpose of this project is to create truly tough robots and super-strong soldiers called Stormtroopers.

The game used a special game engine called Jedi, which made it different from other shooters at the time. It allowed you to do things like move up and down the level, which was new and cool at the time. People who reviewed the game when it was released mostly liked it, especially on PC.
They thought the levels were well made and liked how the game worked. But the PlayStation version isn’t as good, as it has poorer graphics and is slower. Despite this, many people bought the game, and by 1999, nearly 1 million people had purchased it in the United States alone! It performed so well that more games appeared in the series, such as the sequel Dark Forces II.
Now, a company called Nightdive Studios is working to make the game look and play better on the new system. They released an updated version on February 28, 2024, so now you can enjoy the old-school fun on your computer, PlayStation, Xbox, and even Nintendo Switch.

One of the standout features of Dark Forces is its compelling storytelling. Rather than just filming everything in sight, the game introduces fully voiced cutscenes that add depth to the narrative. You’re not just mindlessly bombing enemies – you’re on a mission with real goals and motivations.
The remaster brings these cutscenes to life with new high-resolution assets and improved weapon sprites and world textures. It’s a treat for the eyes while still retaining the original pixel art style that fans love. Whether you’re playing with a controller or using gyro aiming on Switch and PlayStation, controls are smooth and responsive on all platforms. Plus, you can switch between enhanced visuals and original low-resolution graphics for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
While there are some minor issues with music playback and performance on some consoles, they don’t detract from the overall experience. The game still captures the essence of what made Dark Forces great back then. Overall, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered is a wonderful tribute to the classic game. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or a newbie, it’s worth diving into a galaxy far, far away to experience the thrill of fighting Imperial forces in first-person shooter action.
