How does Starfield scan animals and plants?
In Starfield, exploring planets and documenting native species is an important aspect of gameplay. In order to effectively complete planetary surveys and obtain survey boards, you must learn how to scan the various plants and animals you encounter. Although it seems simple, the process is more complicated than it looks.
How to scan the stars for flora and fauna
Unlike other space exploration games like No Man’s Sky, Starfield requires multiple scans of a single plant or animal before it can be officially recognized as discovered. Here’s how to do it:
- Activate the scanner: To start the scanning process, press LB on the controller or “F” on the keyboard to start the scanner.
- Select Target: Highlight the specific flora and fauna you want to collect by moving your cursor over it.
- Start a scan: Press “A” on the controller or “E” on the keyboard to start a scan.
Gain measurement skills
Initially, your scanning distance is limited to 10 meters. However, as you level up and earn skill points, you can unlock the measurement skill. This skill allows you to:
- Increased scanning distance: As your skill level increases, you can scan samples from greater distances.
- Collect more information: Higher skill levels provide more comprehensive data with each scan, reducing the number of plants and animals you need to scan to fully discover.
Find flora and fauna to scan
When using the scanner, keep an eye out for flora and fauna highlighted in blue. This blue indication indicates that the target has not yet been registered. When you hover your mouse over a plant or animal, the scanner will display the amount of data it has acquired. This includes information on available resources, suitability for outpost planting, habitat biomes, and more.
Scanning creatures, especially hostile ones, can be a bit difficult due to their aggressive nature. Hostile creatures are represented by a red symbol next to their species name, while more docile creatures are marked in green. However, if you find yourself under attack and need to defend yourself, you can scan for dead creatures and they will register just as effectively. Additionally, you can harvest items from dead creatures.
Count flora and fauna and add them to planetary surveys
Once you successfully scan a target to 100%, all members of that species will appear green when viewed in the scanner. The tracker on the left side of the scanner will also increase by one, indicating that you have successfully registered the plant and animal species surveyed for that planet. Data related to this species will be displayed with a green banner.
If you have discovered all the flora and fauna within a specific biome, a green notification will appear stating “Biome Complete.” This means you need to return to space and explore different areas to discover new biomes. You can check the current biome by checking the selected landing zone information on the right side of the screen. By clicking on different areas of the globe, you can identify new biomes and track your progress. Completing a planetary survey will reward you with a survey board, which can be sold for various purposes.

Starfield offers an immersive action role-playing experience where players can seamlessly switch between first- and third-person perspectives throughout their journey. In the vast galaxy, there is an open world environment waiting to be explored, including a variety of fictional and non-fictional planetary systems. This universe has over 1,000 planets, as well as numerous moons and space stations for players to land on and explore. The game’s landscapes are a combination of procedurally generated elements and carefully crafted content, resulting in captivating environments.
The game’s realism is excellent, as it generates terrain, alien flora, and fauna based on the planet’s star, atmosphere, and distance from points of interest. Among its many locations, the stunning New Atlantis is the largest fictional city Bethesda has ever created. As players venture forward, they will encounter various non-playable characters (NPCs), some of whom may join their team. These companions contribute unique skills, assist in combat, carry items, and even engage in conversations with other NPCs, reflecting the choices the player makes.
Initially, players personalize their silent protagonist, developing aspects such as appearance, background, and traits. Traits play a key role, affecting stamina and interactions, while a range of skills can be improved, such as physical, social, combat, science, and technology. Customizable weapons including guns, explosives, and melee options bring combat to life, while a jetpack enhances combat and traversal capabilities. Crafting and outpost building introduce resource management and base customization, fostering a sense of ownership and progression.
Ships take center stage, with a modular customization system that allows players to modify components, facilities, paint colors, decorations and weapons. Spaceports offer trading and repair options, while ship combat requires strategic distribution of power. Boarding and interacting with a spaceship piloted by an NPC brings up a variety of options, from looting to diplomacy. Starfield invites players to embark on a mesmerizing journey across the stars, where exploration, customization, and engaging gameplay await.
