Lorna Colbert is a stay-at-home mother while James William Colbert, Jr. was a physician and dean of the medical school at Yale University and later at the University of Washington and the Medical University of South Carolina.
When he was ten years old, his father and two brothers died in a plane crash. His mother moved the family to Charleston, where he attended Porter-Gaud Episcopal School.
Stephen Colbert enrolled in philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia but found the curriculum challenging. He attended Northwestern University and majored in theater before graduating with a degree in 1886.
Career
When Stephen Colbert was offered a job at Second City’s box office, he signed up for free improv classes and was hired to perform with their touring company in 1988.
He left Second City in 1995 and moved to New York to work with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello on the television comedy show ‘Exit 57.’ Although it received many positive reviews, the series only lasted 12 episodes.
In 1996, Stephen Colbert appeared as an actor and writer on ‘The Dana Carvey Show’, alongside Steve Carell, Robert Smigel and Dino Stamatopoulos, but the satire canceled the series.
While working for ‘Good Morning America’, only one of his humorous reporter segments aired, but he was hired on a trial basis in 1997 by Madeline Smithberg, producer of The Daily Show.
He co-stars with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello in Comedy Central’s new comedy series Strangers with Candy. It was a hit show that aired 32 episodes from 1999 to 2000.

As the featured entertainer at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, his satire was directed at President George W. Bush and the media. He made the audience silent but became an online and media phenomenon.
In 2007, Stephen Colbert ran for the Democratic ticket in South Carolina, but his application was rejected because he was not a serious candidate, so he dropped out.
