Stephen Tyrone Colbert (born May 13, 1964) is an American political satirist, writer, comedian, television host, and actor. He aspired to be an actor and studied theater, specializing in improvisational theater. However, his time at Second City changed his career.
He got along well with Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he frequently collaborated. He became famous for his roles on ‘The Dana Carvey Show’ and ‘Strangers with Candy.’ ‘The Daily Show’ made him a household name, and he soon launched his own parody show, ‘The Colbert Report.’

Early life and education
James William Colbert, Jr. and Lorna Colbert raised Stephen Colbert in Washington, D.C.
He is the youngest of 11 siblings, including Elizabeth Colbert Busch, Paul Colbert, Margo Colbert, Mary Colbert, Edward Colbert, Jay Colbert, William Colbert, Peter Colbert, Jimmy Colbert and Thomas Colbert.
Lorna Colbert was a stay-at-home mother while James William Colbert, Jr. was a physician and dean of medical school at Yale University and later Washington University and the Medical University of South Carolina.
When he was ten years old, his father and two brothers were killed in a plane crash. His mother moved the family to Charleston, where he attended Porter-Gaud Episcopal School.
Stephen Colbert enrolled in philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia but found the curriculum challenging. He attended Northwestern University and majored in theater before graduating with a degree in 1886.
Career
When Stephen Colbert was offered a job working in the box office at Second City, he signed up for free improv classes and was hired to perform with their touring company in 1988.
He left Second City in 1995 and moved to New York to co-star with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello in the television comedy show ‘Exit 57’. Despite receiving positive reviews, the show only lasted 12 episodes.
In 1996, Stephen Colbert appeared as an actor and writer on ‘The Dana Carvey Show’, alongside Steve Carell, Robert Smigel and Dino Stamatopoulos, but the satire canceled the series.
During his time at ‘Good Morning America,’ only one of his comedic segments aired, but he was hired for a trial by Madeline Smithberg, producer of The Daily Show, in 1997.
He co-starred with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello in a new Comedy Central comedy series called Strangers with Candy. It was a hit TV show that aired for 32 episodes from 1999 to 2000.
As the featured entertainer at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, his satire on President George W. Bush and the media stunned the audience into silence, but he became an internet and media sensation.
In 2007, Stephen Colbert ran for the Democratic ticket in South Carolina, but his application was rejected because he was not a serious candidate, so he dropped out.
