Early life and education
Wardell Stephen Curry II was born on March 14, 1988 in Akron, Ohio, United States, to former NBA player Dell Curry and his wife Sonya Curry, a former Virginia Tech volleyball player.
The oldest of his parents, Seth Curry, is a professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks. His other brother, Sydel Curry, plays volleyball for Elon University.
Stephen Curry’s father, Dell Curry, was a player for the Cleveland Cavaliers when he was born but later moved to the Charlotte Hornets in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he spent most of his formative years. His father used to drive him and his brother to their cousins’ practices.
The family lived there for a short time after his father joined the Toronto Raptors. During this time, Stephen Curry was in charge of the men’s basketball team at Queensway Christian College, where he led them to an undefeated season. The family moved back to Charlotte, and he enrolled at Charlotte Christian High School.
Due to his small stature, most coaches passed him over and decided not to recruit him. He reluctantly enrolled at Virginia Tech, where his father had attended college, but Coach Seth Greenberg turned him down.
Stephen Curry eventually enrolled at Davidson College in November 2005 after being convinced by a coach named Bob McKillop, who initially recognized his potential when he saw him play football at the age of 10.
Career
After enrolling at Davidson College, Stephen Curry played his first game against Eastern Michigan. He scored only 15 points and had 13 fouls in the game, but he proved his worth by outscoring Michigan by 32 points. He was the second-leading scorer in the nation that season, averaging 21.5 points per game, earning him Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors.
His first season of a record-setting 122 three-pointers was followed by an even stronger showing in the 2007–08 season. He helped the Davidson Wildcats extend their winning streak to 22 games and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1969. Stephen Curry became Davidson’s all-time leading scorer with 34 points in his third season. He also surpassed the previous scoring record of 44 points against Oklahoma on November 18, 2008. That season, he surpassed John Gerdy, the previous scoring leader, and replaced him as the NCAA scoring leader.
Stephen Curry left Davidson College before his senior year to play in the NBA. The Golden State Warriors selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. As a kid, he set the record for most three-pointers made by a rookie in league history with 166, proving his shooting prowess right away.
However, recurring injuries and poor team play kept him out of the spotlight for the next two seasons. The 2012–13 season saw him fully recover from a sprained ankle. He and fellow player Klay Thompson were then nicknamed The Splash Brothers for their record-breaking three-point totals.
The following year, Stephen Curry made his first All-Star Game for the West and was later named to the NBA’s first All-Star Team. He also developed into the Warriors’ best three-point shooter. He broke the league record for most three-pointers made in a season with 286 three-pointers during the 2014–15 campaign.
In 2015, he helped the Warriors win their first championship since 1975, and the NBA named him the Most Valuable Player of the Year. Stephen Curry helped his team win 24 consecutive games the following season, leading to an NBA record 73 wins overall. He led the Warriors to their second consecutive NBA Finals despite being injured. However, despite making a record-breaking 27 three-pointers in the final game, the Warriors were unable to win.
He continued to break records during the 2015–16 season, including his own, setting a new record for most three-pointers made at 402. Stephen Curry broke several three-point records and hit over 300 three-pointers for the second time in league history when he finished the 2016–17 NBA season with 324 three-pointers. By February 25, 2017, his team became the fastest NBA team to earn a spot in the Finals.
He debuted with the United States national basketball team at the 2007 FIBA U-19 World Championship, where the team won the silver medal. He then helped his team win the gold medal as part of the senior team in 2010. Stephen Curry’s team also won the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup without losing a single game.
